What it does
AeroFTP is a desktop client for FTP, FTPS, SFTP, WebDAV, S3-compatible storage and cloud providers, written in Rust and Tauri. For agents the useful part is the command-line tool aeroftp-cli, also called aeroftp and aftp. The commands ls, get, sync, check, mount and serve work through profiles from an encrypted vault, so the agent never sees passwords. Output comes as JSON with exit codes from 0 to 11, and batch scripts live in .aeroftp-script files. aeroftp-cli mcp starts an MCP server with 78 tools in three danger tiers: safe, medium and destructive. They include reading and uploading files, batch delete, tree sync and checksum comparison, copying between two profiles and preflight checks before sync. The axpdev-lab.aeroftp-mcp extension covers Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf and VS Code. aeroftp-cli agent runs the built-in AeroAgent assistant as a proxy that hides credentials. The client installs from packages for Linux, Windows and macOS, for example sudo snap install aeroftp or winget install axpnet.AeroFTP.
Who it is for. Web developers and administrators who hand file work on SFTP servers and S3 to Claude Code or Cursor and want passwords hidden from the agent.
Good fit when
- An agent has to upload a build to a server and compare the remote tree with the local one by checksums
- A folder needs continuous two-way sync with the sync command and the --watch flag
- Remote storage should be mounted as a local folder through FUSE or served over HTTP with serve
- Server passwords must stay out of the agent conversation history
Not a fit when
- One scp call in a script is enough: installing a client with dozens of commands is pointless
- The work machine runs macOS and signed builds are mandatory: the .dmg is not signed with an Apple Developer ID certificate and Gatekeeper blocks it
- You want MCP alone without the desktop app: the CLI ships inside the client packages

- Snap runs in strict confinement and cannot see every file. For full access the author recommends .deb, .AppImage or AUR.
- Update checks, sync, health checks, AeroShare and MCP services can run in the background, although there is no product analytics.

How to disable. Remove the client with the manager you installed it with, for example sudo snap remove aeroftp. Uninstall the MCP extension in VS Code and delete the server entry from the agent config. Profiles sit in the app's encrypted vault.

How do I connect AeroFTP to Claude Desktop or Cursor?
Run aeroftp-cli mcp as a stdio MCP server in the client config, or install the axpdev-lab.aeroftp-mcp extension for VS Code. Create server profiles in the app first.
Will the agent see my server passwords?
No, when you work through --profile: aeroftp-cli reads credentials from the vault itself. Avoid handing the agent a connection string with a password.
Which MCP operations count as destructive?
Tools are split into safe, medium and destructive tiers. The last includes batch delete such as aeroftp_delete_many, so confirm it by hand.
How do I install AeroFTP on Windows?
Run winget install axpnet.AeroFTP. It needs Windows 10 version 1709 or newer and Microsoft App Installer.
How do I compare a server folder with a local one?
aeroftp-cli check --profile "My Server" /local /remote compares the trees by size. Checksum check limits are described in the CLI guide.
