Why this level

How we reviewExtended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

What it does
gping plots response latency for several hosts on one terminal chart. Choose addresses, measurement intervals and visible history to compare connections over time, with IPv4, IPv6 and interface selection. The separate `--cmd` mode plots command execution times instead of network replies. It supports repeated observations of a simple check, but commands execute for real. Graphs show measured behavior; causes and application impact require further investigation.
Who it is for. On-call support staff comparing latency across several hosts in one terminal.
Good fit when
- On-call staff compare several hosts during a network complaint.
- Short latency spikes are inspected over a chosen time window.
- A machine with several connections runs probes through a selected interface.
- A test author watches execution time across repeated runs of a command.
Not a fit when
- You need long-term metrics storage and alerts.
- Missing ping replies must conclusively prove an application failure.
- Command mode would run an unchecked externally supplied string.
Example request
Prepare a gping latency comparison for my two test hosts without command mode or network-setting changes.Limitations
Ping replies depend on the network and remote-host configuration, so charts do not replace application-level checks. The interval and buffer determine measurement frequency and visible history; align them with the problem duration. `--cmd` repeatedly executes supplied commands with user permissions, so use reviewed operations without mutating side effects. Rendering depends on terminal characters; select simple graphics and check window dimensions if readability is poor.
How to disable. Stop gping and check that command-mode processes have ended. Uninstall through the package manager used.
FAQ
Can I compare multiple hosts?
Yes. Pass host addresses consecutively after gping; the documented argument accepts a list. Each host has its own line, so compare spikes on the shared time axis.
What does `--cmd` do?
It charts durations across repeated command runs. They execute with user permissions, so supply only operations without mutating side effects.
How do I choose IPv6?
Add `-6` to resolve targets to IPv6 addresses. The computer and target need an available IPv6 connection for the probe.
Can I change the interval?
Set `--watch-interval` in seconds; fractional values such as 0.5 are accepted. Choose the visible history length separately through the chart buffer.
What if the chart is unreadable?
Enable `--simple-graphics` to change the rendering characters. Enlarge the terminal window if labels do not fit.
