What it does

Grok Build (the `grok` command) is a coding agent from xAI, the company behind Grok. It runs as a full-screen terminal UI: it understands the project, edits files, runs commands, searches the web and manages long-running tasks. It also has a headless mode for scripts and CI and editor integration via ACP. According to xAI's docs, the agent reads Claude Code skills, plugins, MCP servers, hooks and `CLAUDE.md` files with zero setup, along with `AGENTS.md`. Its own skills live in `.grok/skills`, and MCP servers are added with `grok mcp add`. It includes plan mode, subagents, a sandbox, git worktrees and background tasks.

Who it is for. Developers who want a terminal agent on Grok models, and those who already have skills and MCP set up for Claude Code.

Good fit when

  • You want a terminal agent on Grok models
  • You already have The X Subscription or SuperGrok
  • You want to reuse Claude Code skills and MCP in another agent with no setup

Not a fit when

  • Your code must not leave company servers
  • You cannot let an agent run commands on your main machine

Example request

Run grok in the project folder, read CLAUDE.md and propose a plan to add tests to the auth module

Limitations

You need a Grok account or an xAI API key. Grok Build is limited on the free tier; full access comes with The X Subscription from Plus. Grok models run only on xAI servers.

The agent runs shell commands and installs plugins, so review what it executes. Per the README, building from source on Windows is best-effort and untested.

How to disable. Exit the `grok` session. Sign out with `grok logout`; the cached login is stored in `~/.grok/auth.json`.

FAQ

Is Grok Build free?

The agent's code is Apache 2.0. It is limited on the free Grok tier; full access comes with The X Subscription from Plus at $8 a month. You can also use an API key billed per token.

How do I install Grok Build?

On macOS and Linux run `curl -fsSL https://x.ai/cli/install.sh | bash`, on Windows run `irm https://x.ai/cli/install.ps1 | iex` in PowerShell. Check with `grok --version`.

Do Claude Code skills work in Grok Build?

Yes. According to xAI's docs, the agent reads Claude Code skills, plugins, MCP servers, hooks and CLAUDE.md files with zero setup.

How do I sign in to Grok Build?

On the first `grok` run a browser opens to sign in to Grok. Without a browser the agent uses an API key from XAI_API_KEY.

Which model does Grok Build use?

It runs on Grok models. The API has a dedicated grok-build-0.1 model; xAI's latest general model is Grok 4.7.
