What it does
Jevgrep searches a project for code by a description of what it does: `jg "How are telemetry events recorded and sent?" ./my-project`. It is made for coding agents that need to find the right place quickly without reading files in a row. The author claims about 30% lower cost at the same quality in a comparison on ten SWE-bench tasks: this is his number and we did not verify it. Installation: `npm install -g @dzhng/jevgrep`, with Node.js 22 or newer and a provider key (Vercel AI Gateway, TypeSafe, OpenRouter, OpenCode Zen or compatible). Version 0.8.0 from 01.10.2026, MIT license.
Who it is for. For developers who work with big codebases and want an agent to find code by the meaning of a task.
Good fit when
- You need to find the place in someone else's codebase where a feature is implemented without knowing names
- You need description-based search for coding agents
- You need to cut token spending on reading extra files
Not a fit when
- You cannot send the project's code to a model provider
- You need an exact string search: ordinary grep is enough for that
Example request
Find the code in the project that calculates the discount for regular customers and explain where the thresholds come fromLimitations
For search, the project's code is sent to a model provider, so do not use the tool on closed projects without consent. A provider key and Node.js 22 or newer are needed. The 30% savings figure comes from the author and we did not verify it. Access is extended: the utility reads project files.
How to disable. Remove the package with npm uninstall -g @dzhng/jevgrep and revoke the provider key you entered.
