How we reviewExtended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

What it does
Maigret checks a username across websites and extracts available profile information. Discovered links and identifiers can seed recursive searches, while category and country tags narrow the scope. The terminal tool needs no search API keys. Reports and a web interface expose results and relationship graphs. Optional AI analysis sends findings to an OpenAI-compatible provider. A matching handle is a lead to verify, rather than proof that accounts belong to one person.
Who it is for. Open-source investigators checking public profiles for a known handle and manually verifying account links.
Good fit when
- Find where your own handle is used.
- Collect public profile URLs sharing a username.
- Narrow a search to site categories or countries.
- Save findings and verify them against source pages.
Not a fit when
- You need private messages or access to another account.
- A username match would be treated as identity proof.
- Findings would be used to harass a person.
Example request
Find public profiles using my handle, save source links and mark matches requiring manual verification.Limitations
The pip installation needs Python 3.10 or later; standalone builds serve other environments. Site changes and request restrictions can cause missed accounts, so an empty result is not proof of absence. The site database updates from GitHub and falls back to a bundled copy when unavailable; record which version was used when comparing runs. Optional AI analysis sends findings to a model provider, requiring a review of report contents and permitted data processing.
How to disable. Stop Maigret and any web interface. Remove stored reports and the analysis-provider key if no longer needed.
FAQ
Are API keys required?
Not for regular searches. Configure a provider key separately for optional AI analysis.
Does it check every site by default?
No. The default checks a high-traffic subset. Select the intended scope before running.
Can I narrow the search?
Yes. Use `--tags` for categories or countries, checking available tags first.
Does a matching handle prove identity?
No. Verify links, content and other evidence for each profile.
Can I view results in a browser?
Yes. Use HTML reports or the documented web interface.
