What it does
MCP Tools is a Go command-line utility for working with Model Context Protocol servers over stdio and HTTP transports. It lists and calls a server's tools, resources and prompts, prints results as a table or JSON, and opens an interactive shell or a web interface. Mock mode spins up a stub server for client testing, proxy mode turns shell scripts into MCP tools, and guard mode restricts tool access by patterns. A separate command scans and edits MCP configuration across VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Desktop and Claude Code. It also scaffolds a new TypeScript server.

Good fit when
- You need to quickly see what tools and resources an MCP server exposes and call them from the terminal

- You need a ready application MCP server, not a tool for working with servers
- You need config scanning outside macOS: that command is macOS only for now

Application config scanning and editing work on macOS only for now. Guard mode applies to the stdio transport only, not HTTP. The HTTP SSE transport supports only protocol version 2024-11-05. The scaffolding generator creates TypeScript projects only.
How to disable. Remove the binary via brew uninstall mcp, or delete the installed go binary. Its settings and logs live in ~/.mcpt.

FAQ
What is the binary called after install?
Homebrew installs mcp with an mcpt alias. Building from source produces mcptools, which you can alias to mcpt.
Does it work with remote servers?
Yes. URLs default to streamable HTTP, and the SSE transport is picked up automatically when the address ends with /sse.
