How we review

Broad accessThe tool can change data, run commands or handle secrets.

  • Live rules move, rename or delete every matching file.
  • Custom filters and actions can execute inline Python and shell commands.

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.

What it does

organize is a CLI that applies file-management rules from a YAML configuration. Users choose folders, filters and actions to move invoices, rename documents or find duplicates. Rules can match extensions, names, EXIF metadata and extracted text. A simulation shows planned changes before a live run. After reviewing it, users execute the rule. Python and shell actions can be included for tasks beyond the built-in actions. It runs on macOS, Windows and Linux.

Who it is for. People repeatedly sorting download folders, invoices or photographs by consistent attributes.

Good fit when

  • PDF invoices accumulate in Downloads and an operator sorts them into a dedicated folder.
  • A photographer groups images by EXIF instead of renaming them by hand.
  • An administrator previews empty-folder cleanup in a simulation.
  • An office team selects documents by extracted PDF or DOCX text.

Not a fit when

  • A user plans to apply unfamiliar shell or Python rules to working files without inspection.
  • The only document copy must be retained but a rule includes the `delete` action.
  • A team expects continuous scheduled monitoring but has only configured a one-time rule invocation.

Example request

Create an organize rule for PDFs in Downloads and show `organize sim`; wait for review before moving files.

Limitations

Python 3.9 or later is required; the package name is `organize-tool`, while the command is `organize`. Users define the rules themselves and must choose folders and inspect filter matches before a live run. Simulation displays the plan, and a separate `run` command applies changes. The author points version 2 users to a migration guide for version 3 because actions, filters and options changed between those versions.

How to disable. Remove `organize run` from schedules and scripts. Retain the configuration separately; stopping the tool does not reverse completed moves or deletions.

FAQ

How do I preview changes?

`organize sim` shows matching files and planned actions. Review source and destination folders, then use `organize run` if the plan is correct.

Where do I edit a rule?

Create a configuration with `organize new`, then open `organize edit`. If the editor does not open, `organize show --reveal` reveals the folder containing `config.yaml`.

Why does the rule do nothing?

In the README example, `Nothing to do` means there are no PDFs in the chosen folder. Compare `locations` and the `extension` filter against the actual files, then simulate again.

How do I find configuration errors first?

Run `organize check`. It validates configuration without applying live rules; after resolving errors, proceed to `organize sim`.

How do I choose a different rule file?

The README syntax accepts `<config>` as a configuration name or path. Pass your file after `organize sim`, then inspect the plan for that specific configuration.

README in short

Rules combine `locations`, `filters` and `actions`. Author examples include invoice sorting by name and empty-directory deletion. `organize list` shows configurations and `organize check` validates a configuration.
