What it does
Quarto is a CLI for publishing scientific and technical documents from Markdown. Authors combine prose with executable Python, R, Julia or JavaScript blocks, then render the publication with computation results. Pandoc converts the prepared content into the selected output format. Project configuration joins multiple documents, shared options and book or website navigation. Preview mode rebuilds a document and displays it in a browser while editing. Plain-text documents can be authored in an ordinary editor.
Who it is for. Researchers and analysts publishing computation results alongside explanation and a reproducible source.
Good fit when
- An analyst updates data and rebuilds a report with figures.
- A teacher combines course chapters into a book.
- A team maintains a technical website with shared document options.
- An author reviews prose and code output in a browser before release.
Not a fit when
- An unreviewed document contains executable code and rendering would use working credentials.
- The user only needs a simple slide converter without a publishing project.
- The environment lacks the execution engine required by Python or R blocks.
Example request
Review this Quarto source and code blocks, then render a report copy in an isolated environment and show the result.Limitations
The README installs a development version through checkout and `configure.sh` or `configure.cmd`; this is distinct from a prebuilt stable package. Executable blocks depend on their engine, such as Jupyter or Knitr, and its environment. Rendering those blocks runs document code with the current user’s permissions. Project-wide settings are separate from the prose, so transferring a publication requires retaining both its configuration and source files.
How to disable. Stop `quarto preview` and remove render calls from jobs. Source `.qmd` files, project settings and published documents remain.
FAQ
Does cloning the repository install a stable release?
`git clone https://github.com/quarto-dev/quarto-cli`, `cd quarto-cli` and `./configure.sh` install a development version on Linux/macOS. For a stable release, choose an installer at https://quarto.org/docs/get-started/.
How do I preview while editing?
The official guide uses `quarto preview hello.qmd`. It renders the document and opens a browser, updating the preview when the source is saved.
How do I create DOCX?
The guide gives `quarto render hello.qmd --to docx`. Substitute your source and review executable blocks first, then inspect the generated document.
Where are shared project settings stored?
In `_quarto.yml` at the project root. Retain it alongside the documents when moving a book or site to preserve shared formats and configuration.
What executes Python in qmd?
The guide describes Jupyter processing code blocks and returning their results before Pandoc conversion. Prepare the required Python environment before rendering.

README in short
The README connects Markdown, Pandoc and execution engines. Authoring works in VS Code, JupyterLab, RStudio and other editors. A project can render a website or book from a group of documents.
