What it does
Squad configures an AI-agent team inside a repository. It proposes members after a project brief, while the human approves roles and direction. Knowledge and decisions persist in inspectable files between sessions. GitHub Copilot is the primary workflow, with additional client coordinators and shared state available. A watch mode triages and dispatches issues. Owners remain responsible for permissions and reviewing results.
Who it is for. Small-team technical leads delegating independent work to agents with repository-visible decisions.
Good fit when
- A project needs separate implementation, review and test roles.
- Prior-session decisions should remain beside source code.
- Multiple agent clients need one team configuration.
- GitHub issues need initial routing to team members.
Not a fit when
- Parallel agents may not modify the shared project.
- Every tool call requires approval but yolo mode is selected.
- An agent team is expected to replace human release review.
Example request
Propose a Squad team with a separate tester. Show roles, file ownership and permission mode before starting work.Limitations
The npm installation needs Node.js 22.5 or newer, with clients and authorization for Copilot and GitHub features. The quick-start example uses yolo mode without individual tool approvals, so choose access settings before work. Updating requires both a new CLI and a separate refresh of managed project files. The no-argument interactive Squad shell is deprecated in favor of the Copilot CLI workflow.
How to disable. Stop watch mode and active agent sessions, then remove client integration. Preserve team-state files for review before deleting them.
FAQ
Where can I inspect the team?
After `squad init`, open `.squad/team.md` and review member files.
Is updating npm enough?
No. Run `squad upgrade` afterward for project files and review the diff.
Does upgrading preserve memory?
Team state is preserved; customized managed files receive local backups.
Can I add Codex later?
Yes. The guide uses `squad upgrade --client codex`; review resulting configuration.
Why omit yolo?
Copilot then prompts for tool approvals. Choose that mode when actions need review.

README in short
Multiple installation and update channels are available. Triage can route issues without execution until dispatch is enabled separately.
