Ableton MCP

An MCP server for Ableton Live: the agent creates tracks, places clips and builds arrangements straight in the open project

MCP server

Medium risk

We rate an entry medium when the tool runs code, makes network calls or reads project files. Check what exactly it does before installing.

Why this level

  • Drives the open Ableton project over a socket and changes its contents
  • Sends telemetry with prompt text and project data outward by default
All reasons and checks

ahujasid/ableton-mcp

Install

In your terminal, with SkillFoxx CLI

npx skillfoxx add mcp/ableton-mcp

Detects the agents on your machine, checks the risk and pins the version.

Other ways to install

Run in a terminal

claude mcp add --transport stdio AbletonMCP -- uvx ableton-mcp

Or add to the file .mcp.json, in the project

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "AbletonMCP": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "ableton-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcpServers key.

Install in Cursor

The button opens the agent and offers to add the server. If nothing happens, copy the config below.

Add to the file ~/.cursor/mcp.json, for all projects

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "AbletonMCP": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "ableton-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcpServers key. For a single project, put the same block into .cursor/mcp.json.

Install in VS Code

The button opens the agent and offers to add the server. If nothing happens, copy the config below.

Run in a terminal

code --add-mcp '{"name":"AbletonMCP","type":"stdio","command":"uvx","args":["ableton-mcp"]}'

Or add to the file .vscode/mcp.json, in the project

{
  "servers": {
    "AbletonMCP": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "ableton-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

If the file already exists, add the server inside the servers key.

Run in a terminal

codex mcp add AbletonMCP -- uvx ableton-mcp

Or add to the file ~/.codex/config.toml, for all projects

[mcp_servers.AbletonMCP]
command = "uvx"
args = ["ableton-mcp"]

If the file already exists, append the block to the end.

Run in a terminal

gemini mcp add -s user AbletonMCP uvx ableton-mcp

Or add to the file ~/.gemini/settings.json, for all projects

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "AbletonMCP": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "ableton-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcpServers key.

Add to the file ~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json, for all projects

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "AbletonMCP": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "ableton-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcpServers key. Legacy Cascade keeps the MCP config in ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json.

Formerly Windsurf.

Add to the file cline_mcp_settings.json, for all projects

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "AbletonMCP": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "ableton-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcpServers key. Open the settings file in Cline: MCP Servers tab, Configure MCP Servers.

Add to the file .roo/mcp.json, in the project

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "AbletonMCP": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "ableton-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcpServers key.

A fork of Roo Code, same .roo folders.

Add to the file opencode.json, in the project

{
  "mcp": {
    "AbletonMCP": {
      "type": "local",
      "command": [
        "uvx",

}

If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcp key.

Add to the file ~/.config/zed/settings.json, for all projects

{
  "context_servers": {
    "AbletonMCP": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "ableton-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

If the file already exists, add the server inside the context_servers key.

Add to the file .codeassistant/mcp.json, in the project

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "AbletonMCP": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "ableton-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcpServers key.

You will need: uv

Checked against the repository on Sep 24, 2026, commit 9dddc7b.

Text for your agent

Install uv, add the server to the client: for Claude Code run claude mcp add AbletonMCP uvx ableton-mcp, for Claude Desktop and Cursor set uvx ableton-mcp in the MCP config. Then install the Remote Script with uvx --from ableton-mcp ableton-mcp-install-script and select AbletonMCP in the Control Surface in Ableton's settings.

Other ways from the author
claude mcp add AbletonMCP uvx ableton-mcp

Install uv first, for example brew install uv on macOS.

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.

What it does

The server links an MCP client to Ableton Live over a socket and lets the agent drive the session. It has two parts: a Remote Script for Ableton that opens a socket server inside the program, and a Python MCP server that receives commands from the client. Through it the agent creates and changes MIDI and audio tracks, picks instruments and effects from Ableton's library, creates and edits MIDI clips with notes, builds whole song sections in Arrangement view and controls playback. It runs via uvx, and a separate command installs the Remote Script into Ableton's user library. By default the server collects telemetry, including prompt text, notes and track and clip names, which can be turned off with an environment variable.

Who it is for. For people making music in Ableton Live who want to build and edit a project through an agent.

Good fit when

  • You want to create tracks, clips and arrangements in Ableton through requests to the agent
  • You want to quickly sketch song sections: intro, buildup, drop, breakdown and outro
  • You want the agent to pick instruments and effects from Ableton's library from a task description

Not a fit when

  • You do not use Ableton Live: the server works only with it
  • You do not want telemetry sent and are not willing to disable it
  • You expect a complex project in a single request: break it into steps instead

Example request

Create four tracks for a house track, sketch a kick and bass at 124 bpm and build an eight-bar intro

Limitations

You need Ableton Live 10 or newer, Python 3.10+ and the uv manager. Only one instance of the server may run at a time, otherwise there are conflicts. Complex arrangements are better built step by step rather than in one request. The server targets Ableton's default devices and browser items. Telemetry is on by default and sends out prompt text, notes and track and clip names; it is disabled with the ABLETON_MCP_DISABLE_TELEMETRY variable. This is a third-party integration, not an Ableton product.

How to disable. Remove the AbletonMCP block from the MCP client config. In Ableton under Link, Tempo & MIDI clear AbletonMCP from the Control Surface. Optionally delete the AbletonMCP folder from the user library's Remote Scripts.

ABLETON_MCP_DISABLE_TELEMETRY
Disables telemetry collection when set to true. Telemetry is on by default.

Security check

  • Drives the open Ableton project over a socket and changes its contents
  • Sends telemetry with prompt text and project data outward by default

README in short

The README describes a pairing of an Ableton Remote Script and a Python MCP server that lets an agent drive Ableton Live over a socket. Setup takes three steps: install uv, register the server in the MCP client via uvx ableton-mcp, install the Remote Script and select AbletonMCP in the Control Surface section. The agent creates tracks, clips and arrangements, picks instruments and effects and controls playback. There is a warning to run only one server instance. Telemetry is on by default and is disabled with an environment variable, with details in TERMS.md. MIT licensed.

FAQ

Is this an official Ableton tool?

No. It is a third-party integration made by an independent author, not by Ableton.

How do I disable telemetry?

Set the ABLETON_MCP_DISABLE_TELEMETRY environment variable to true before starting the server; for Claude Desktop add it to the config's env block.
