What it does

The server gives the agent a literature loop over arXiv: search for a paper, download it, read the author-submitted LaTeX one section at a time, export BibTeX from arXiv metadata and keep watches on chosen topics. Downloaded papers stay on disk, by default in ~/.arxiv-mcp-server/papers, with a configurable path. The main flow runs paper ID, outline, one section, citations, and search is optional. The server runs locally over the stdio transport and connects to Claude Code, Codex, Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code and other clients through standard MCP configuration. An extended mode adds semantic search over downloaded papers, and a plugin build installs the MCP connection together with a companion arXiv research skill.

Limitations

The server works with arXiv preprints and does not cover other databases. It needs uv, which provides the uvx command, and CPython 3.11 or newer. Search, download and citation work reach external services; what stays local is the reading and storage loop. Semantic search is an extra mode with separate dependencies. An unrelated npm package shares the name, so install only the PyPI package.

How to disable. Remove the server entry from the client's MCP configuration, for example claude mcp remove arxiv. If installed as a plugin, remove it via /plugin.
