How we review

Extended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

  • The CodeGPT key is passed as a launch argument and is visible in the client configuration and the process list
  • Graph queries go to the external DeepGraph and CodeGPT services

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.

What it does

Deep Graph MCP connects an agent to a knowledge graph of a repository's code. The DeepGraph service builds the graph: in the address of any GitHub repository you swap github.com for deepgraph.co and get a graph of that project. The server reads public graphs without an account, or private graphs from your CodeGPT account. There are seven tools. list-graphs shows the available graphs, nodes-semantic-search finds functionality from a plain-language description, docs-semantic-search searches the repository documentation, and get-code returns the full source of the fragment it found. find-direct-connections shows the direct relations of a function, get-usage-dependency-links lists what a change to an entity would affect, and folder-tree-structure prints a folder tree. For Claude Code the repository ships nine ready commands in the .claude/commands folder. Six need no parameters: architecture overview, security audit, test coverage analysis, technical debt assessment, API ecosystem analysis and repository onboarding. Three take a parameter: migration planning, performance optimization and onboarding to a single component.

Who it is for. For developers who explore an unfamiliar repository through Claude Code, Cursor or Windsurf and want to ask the agent about relations in the code without loading the whole project into context.

Good fit when

  • You need to understand the architecture of someone else's open project that already has a public graph on DeepGraph
  • Before changing a function you want to know which parts of the code depend on it and get a list of affected places
  • You are joining a large codebase and looking for where a needed capability lives, using a plain-language description
  • You are planning a migration from one technology to another and want it grounded in real links between modules
  • You want a structured technical debt or test coverage report built by a single Claude Code command

Not a fit when

  • You need a fully local index with no code sent to an external service: DeepGraph builds and stores the graph
  • The code is private and you have no CodeGPT account: public graphs do not cover a closed repository
  • You want to edit code or run tests: the server only reads the graph and changes nothing in the project
  • The repository is small and the agent copes with it by reading files directly

Example request

Using Deep Graph, find where routing is handled in the vercel/next.js repository and show which functions call that code.

Limitations

Private graphs need a CodeGPT account: an API key, plus an optional organization ID and graph ID. All three values are passed as arguments of the launch command, so the key ends up in the client configuration and in the computer's process list.

The DeepGraph service builds graphs from a repository link, and answer quality depends on how it parsed the project. The repository was last updated in November 2025. Access to the service from Russia was not checked for this card. The server is useless without access to the codegpt.co and deepgraph.co sites.

How to disable. Remove the server from Claude Code with claude mcp remove "Deep Graph MCP". If you copied the ready commands, delete the files from the project's .claude/commands folder. Revoke the CodeGPT key on the keys page of your account if needed.

FAQ

How do I install Deep Graph MCP in Claude Code?

For a public repository run claude mcp add "Deep Graph MCP" npx -- -y mcp-code-graph@latest username/repository-name. You can list several repositories separated by spaces. For team use add the -s project flag so the setup lands in the project file.

Do I need an account to use Deep Graph MCP?

Public DeepGraph graphs need no account. Private graphs require a CodeGPT account, a repository uploaded to Code Graph and an API key from the keys page. The organization ID and graph ID are optional.

How do I get a graph for my repository?

For a public GitHub repository replace github.com in the address with deepgraph.co, for example deepgraph.co/username/repo. For closed code upload the repository to Code Graph in your CodeGPT account and connect the graph with your key.

What do the ready commands /project:analyze-architecture and /project:security-audit do?

They are Claude Code commands that combine several graph tool calls into one analysis: an architecture overview and a security audit. To enable them copy the .claude/commands folder into your project root. Commands with parameters, such as /project:migration-planner React to Vue.js, take a component or technology name.

Which clients does the server work with?

Cursor, Windsurf, GitHub Copilot, Claude Desktop and the CodeGPT extension all use the same mcpServers block with an npx command. For Gemini CLI the same block goes into settings.json: the user file in the home folder or the project file in the .gemini folder.
