Draw.io MCP Server
The official draw.io MCP server: an agent builds diagrams from XML or Mermaid and opens them in the draw.io editor
Medium risk
We rate an entry medium when the tool runs code, makes network calls or reads project files. Check what exactly it does before installing.
Why this level
- The local server runs via npx and writes files to disk
- The hosted option sends diagram content to the draw.io server

What it does
The server from the draw.io team lets a model create diagrams and open them in the editor. The repository bundles several options. The App server, over the MCP Apps protocol, renders the diagram inline in chat as an interactive view, is hosted at mcp.draw.io and needs no install. The local tool server installs via npx and opens the diagram in the draw.io editor, understanding XML, CSV and Mermaid. The create_diagram and search_shapes tools let it find the right shape among tens of thousands of library entries and return a ready style string. Separately there are plugins for Claude Code, Codex CLI and GitHub Copilot: they save a .drawio file and on request export it to PNG, SVG or PDF with the XML embedded, so the export stays editable.
Who it is for. For developers, analysts and technical writers who need editable diagrams straight from an agent.
Good fit when
- You need an architecture, ER, sequence or flow diagram
- You need the right shape and style from draw.io libraries
- You need a .drawio file you can refine by hand later
Not a fit when
- You only need a finished image with no editing
- You have no MCP-capable host
Example request
Build an architecture diagram of our service in draw.io and leave a file I can editLimitations
Inline rendering works only on hosts that support the MCP Apps extension; elsewhere the tool returns XML as text. The local tool server needs Node and npm. PNG, SVG and PDF export via the plugin runs through the draw.io desktop app; without it only the .drawio file and a link are available. In the hosted option the diagram content is sent to the draw.io server. Apache-2.0 licensed.
How to disable. Remove the drawio entry from your agent's MCP config. If you installed the plugin, remove it via /plugin.

README in short
The README describes four ways to connect draw.io with assistants: a hosted App server with inline rendering, a local tool server that opens the editor, plugins for Claude Code, Codex CLI and GitHub Copilot, and a no-MCP option via project instructions. For each it lists where it works, which formats it supports and how it installs. The App server is available at mcp.draw.io, the tool server is published on npm as @drawio/mcp. The search_shapes tool searches shapes across tens of thousands of library entries and an icon service. Apache-2.0 licensed.
FAQ
Do I need an account or key?
No. The hosted server and the local tool server work with no key and no login.
Which input formats are supported?
The local tool server understands XML, CSV and Mermaid. The App server and plugins take XML as the native format.
