Jumpstarter MCP
MCP server for a device test bench: an agent leases a board, connects and runs jmp commands on real or virtual hardware.

Broad access
Why this level
- The `jmp_run` tool executes commands on connected devices: power and `ssh`.
- Leasing shared hardware blocks it for other engineers until the agent releases it.
Install
- Works in
Manual install
pip install --extra-index-url https://pkg.jumpstarter.dev/ jumpstarter-cliThe first Quick Start command installs the `jmp` CLI; `jumpstarter-mcp` ships with the full install.

What it does
Jumpstarter is an open-source test automation framework for embedded systems. Real and virtual hardware is controlled through shared drivers for UART, CAN, SPI, GPIO, power and USB. The `jumpstarter-mcp` package exposes that control to an agent as MCP tools. The agent lists devices with online status and active leases, takes one by selector or name, connects and runs `jmp` commands, for example powering a board on or opening an `ssh` session. Separate tools show which commands and drivers a device offers and reveal method signatures. The server starts with `jmp mcp serve` and talks to the client over stdio.
Who it is for. Embedded developers and test engineers who run a Jumpstarter bench and an agent in Claude Code or Cursor.
Good fit when
- An agent checks which boards in the cluster are free and which are leased by someone else.
- An automated test asks for a QEMU target and powers it on with `power on`.
- After a failing test the agent opens `ssh` on the device and reads `/etc/os-release`.
- Before writing a test you need to inspect a device's drivers and method signatures.
Not a fit when
- The `jmp` client is not configured and there is neither a Jumpstarter cluster nor a local bench.
- The task is reading register and protocol documentation with no access to devices.
- Shared team hardware must not be handed to an agent unattended.

Limitations
You need an installed `jmp` with a configured client identity and access to a Jumpstarter service or local devices. The `jumpstarter-mcp` package ships with the full install and requires Python 3.12 or newer. The server keeps device connections open, so release leases when finished. Works on Linux and macOS. The Jumpstarter service itself is deployed in Kubernetes separately following the documentation; a local bench needs only the client.
How to disable. Remove the jumpstarter entry from the client's MCP configuration and release active leases with `jmp_delete_lease`.
FAQ
How do I connect Jumpstarter to Claude Code?
Run `claude mcp add jumpstarter -- jmp mcp serve`. It registers a server that launches `jmp mcp serve` over stdio.
How do I add the server to Cursor?
Add a `jumpstarter` server to `~/.cursor/mcp.json` with command `jmp` and arguments `mcp` and `serve`.
Which tools does the server expose?
Leases and devices: `jmp_list_exporters`, `jmp_list_leases`, `jmp_create_lease`, `jmp_delete_lease`. Connections: `jmp_connect`, `jmp_disconnect`, `jmp_list_connections`. Device work: `jmp_run`, `jmp_get_env`, `jmp_explore`, `jmp_drivers`, `jmp_driver_methods`.
Which clients are supported?
Any MCP client with stdio. The documentation covers Cursor, Claude Code and Claude Desktop.
What is Jumpstarter?
An open-source test framework for embedded systems: drivers for UART, CAN, SPI, GPIO, power and USB, pytest integration and shared hardware leases for teams.
