Access and checks
How we reviewExtended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.
- The server reads, writes and deletes vault files holding your conversations.
- The extension collects conversations through your signed-in provider sessions.
This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.
What it does
Kept saves AI conversations as plain Markdown files in `~/.kept/vault/`. A Chromium browser extension reads them from provider API responses, the desktop app writes the files and builds a SQLite full-text index and a link graph. The vault opens in Obsidian or any editor. The `mcp/` folder holds the `kept-vault-server` MCP server: `list_vault`, `list_directory`, `read_file`, `write_file`, `update_file`, `delete_file`, `move_file` and `grep_vault`. This lets Claude Code find a solution from an old chat and save notes. Install with the `kept-vault` plugin or a script.
Who it is for. People who accumulate working solutions in chats with different AIs and want a coding agent to search them on request.
Good fit when
- A solution was found in a chat six months ago and the exact wording is lost.
- An agent saves session results as a note in the vault.
- The chat archive is needed in Obsidian instead of a provider window.
- History from ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini should live in one place.
Not a fit when
- You need cloud sync or an account: Kept has neither.
- The browser is not Chromium-based, which the extension requires.
- An agent must not get write and delete access to vault files.
Example request
Find the conversation in my vault about configuring nginx for WebSockets and summarize the final config.MCP
- Transport
- stdio
- Authentication
- not required
Environment variables
`KEPT_VAULT_PATH`- Vault path when it is not at `~/.kept/vault`.
Limitations
The MCP server installs separately from the desktop app and browser extension; the extension is still loaded manually in developer mode. Sync takes data from private provider APIs that change without notice, and Gemini is called best effort. The server can write, move and delete vault files, so limit its access. The README offers `curl | bash` for installation, so read the script before running it. The last commit is from June 2026.
How to disable. Run `/plugin uninstall kept-vault` or remove the MCP entry. The `~/.kept/` directory, the app and the extension stay and are removed separately.
FAQ
How do I connect MCP in Claude Code?
Run `/plugin marketplace add egroup-labs/kept.work`, then `/plugin install kept-vault@kept-plugins`. Scripts for Linux, macOS and PowerShell also exist.
Where are conversations stored?
In `~/.kept/vault/` as plain Markdown files grouped by provider. The `KEPT_VAULT_PATH` variable sets another path.
Which chats are supported?
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Kimi. Gemini is best effort because Google's API format changes often.
Is there a cloud account?
No, the archive and search stay on your machine. Archive chat and the graph call only the model you configure, or local Ollama.
Which tools does the server have?
Eight: `list_vault`, `list_directory`, `read_file`, `write_file`, `update_file`, `delete_file`, `move_file` and `grep_vault`.
