Why this level

  • A token with the `pullrequest` scope plus `bb_post`, `bb_put`, `bb_patch` and `bb_delete` let the agent create, approve, merge and delete
  • The Atlassian API token sits in an environment variable and opens workspace repositories

Install

In your terminal, with SkillFoxx CLI

npx skillfoxx add mcp/mcp-server-atlassian-bitbucket

Detects the agents on your machine, shows the access level and pins the version.

How we review

Broad accessThe tool can change data, run commands or handle secrets.

  • A token with the `pullrequest` scope plus `bb_post`, `bb_put`, `bb_patch` and `bb_delete` let the agent create, approve, merge and delete
  • The Atlassian API token sits in an environment variable and opens workspace repositories

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.

What it does

The Node.js server connects Claude Desktop, Cursor, Cline and other MCP clients to Bitbucket Cloud. Instead of dozens of narrow commands it has six generic tools. `bb_get`, `bb_post`, `bb_put`, `bb_patch` and `bb_delete` call any REST API 2.0 path, with the `/2.0` prefix added automatically, and `bb_clone` clones a repository to disk. An agent lists workspaces, reads commits and files, compares branches, opens pull requests, comments, approves and merges. Responses come in TOON format by default, which the author says saves 30–60% of tokens compared with JSON; setting `outputFormat` to `json` returns plain JSON. The `jq` parameter takes a JMESPath expression and keeps only the fields you need. The same calls work from a terminal: `npx -y @aashari/mcp-server-atlassian-bitbucket get --path "/workspaces"`.

Who it is for. Developers and team leads on Bitbucket Cloud who want an agent to summarise pull requests, search code and compare branches.

Good fit when

  • You want a list of open pull requests with author and state and a short answer: `jq` keeps three fields
  • An agent compares a branch with main and summarises the difference
  • A comment with test results has to go onto PR #123 straight from chat
  • A file is read without cloning through `/repositories/{workspace}/{repo}/src/{commit}/{filepath}`
  • Pipeline and deployment status is read with the same calls on the `/pipelines` and `/deployments` paths

Not a fit when

  • Your repositories live on Bitbucket Server or Data Center: the server works with Bitbucket Cloud only
  • The agent may only read: the server has no read-only mode, so the token's scopes set the limit
  • You want ready narrow commands such as list branches: the tools here are generic and the agent builds the path itself

Example request

Show the open pull requests in my-workspace/backend-api with author and state, and compare the feature-login branch with main

Environment variables

ATLASSIAN_USER_EMAIL required
Atlassian account email, the username for the scoped API token
ATLASSIAN_API_TOKEN required, secret
Scoped Atlassian API token with Bitbucket scopes
BITBUCKET_DEFAULT_WORKSPACE
Default workspace for calls that do not name one

Limitations

  • The author calls Bitbucket app passwords deprecated, with removal in June 2026, so you need an Atlassian email and a scoped API token, which starts with `ATATT`.
  • The last commit in the repository dates from March 2026, package version 3.1.0.
  • The README has no ready command for Claude Code: setup is described for Claude Desktop and through the `~/.mcp/configs.json` file.
  • Without `jq` responses can be large and eat context; the author advises always setting a filter.

How to disable. Remove the bitbucket block from the MCP client configuration or from `~/.mcp/configs.json` and restart the client. Revoke the token at id.atlassian.com/manage-profile/security/api-tokens. A global install is removed with `npm uninstall -g @aashari/mcp-server-atlassian-bitbucket`.

FAQ

How do I create a token for the Bitbucket MCP server?

Open id.atlassian.com/manage-profile/security/api-tokens and choose Create API token with scopes, product Bitbucket. `repository` and `workspace` are enough to read; add `pullrequest` for pull requests. Your Atlassian email is the username and the token starts with `ATATT`.

How do I cut token use on Bitbucket responses?

Pass `jq` with a JMESPath expression such as `values[].name`. TOON is already the default format. To see the response fields, first request a single item with `pagelen` set to `1`, then narrow the filter.

Which API paths come up most often?

`/workspaces`, `/repositories/{workspace}` and `/repositories/{workspace}/{repo}/pullrequests` are enough to start. The difference between branches comes from `/repositories/{workspace}/{repo}/diff/{source}..{destination}`, and a PR's own diff sits at `/pullrequests/{id}/diff`.

Which clients work with the Bitbucket MCP server?

The README names Claude Desktop (official support), Cursor AI, Continue.dev, Cline and any MCP client with the STDIO transport. For Claude Desktop the README has a ready settings block, and other clients need the command `npx -y @aashari/mcp-server-atlassian-bitbucket`.

Can the agent change or delete data in Bitbucket?

Yes, if the token allows it. `bb_post`, `bb_put`, `bb_patch` and `bb_delete` call any write path, such as merging or declining a pull request. For read-only use give the token `repository` and `workspace` scopes only.

README in short

The README walks from creating a token to a quick npx trial, then shows the Claude Desktop configuration and a shared settings file. Below come a table of the six tools with parameters, a list of common API paths, an explanation of TOON and JMESPath filtering, example requests and token-saving tips.
