What it does
Molio MCP connects external agents to an already running Molio knowledge service. Agents list vaults, browse file trees, read text and search. More complex questions can be passed to the AI runtime configured in Molio. The MCP layer is read-only: it cannot add, import or delete documents. The Molio platform prepares notes and converted files into knowledge collections that users can also explore directly.
Who it is for. Personal knowledge-base owners who want document retrieval inside Claude Code, Cursor or Codex conversations.
Good fit when
- Agent work needs a note from an existing Molio vault.
- An answer requires reading a file without permission to change it.
- Several vaults need task-specific selection.
- A complex knowledge question should use Molio’s configured AI runtime.
Not a fit when
- You need document import or editing through this MCP layer.
- No Molio service is running on the machine or server.
- The agent must not receive the selected vault’s contents.

Limitations
The CLI package requires Node.js 20 or later, separately from full-platform source-build requirements. Molio Desktop or its daemon must already be running because MCP only calls its API. Model-generated answers require an installed, configured AI runtime; ordinary search and reading do not provide one. Without an explicit vault selection, Molio uses the current vault, so check its name before queries when personal and work documents coexist.
How to disable. Remove Molio from the client’s MCP configuration. The external agent loses access, while Molio and its vaults remain; stop the service separately if needed.
FAQ
How do I check Molio availability?
Run `npx -y @molio/cli status` to inspect service health and the current vault.
How do I register it in Claude Code?
Use `claude mcp add molio -- npx -y @molio/cli mcp` with Molio running.
Why is a complex answer not immediate?
Molio starts a separate run and returns its identifier. The agent needs to wait for that run’s result.
How do I select another vault in the CLI?
Pass `--vault` with an ID or name; use the ID when names are ambiguous.
What if the service uses another port?
Set `MOLIO_PORT` or the complete address in `MOLIO_DAEMON_URL`, then check status again.
