What it does
Obsidian MCP Plugin runs an MCP server right inside Obsidian: eight tools for vault operations, search and graph. Installation through the Obsidian plugin catalog or an `.mcpb` file. Connection to Claude Code: `claude mcp add --transport http obsidian http://localhost:3001/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"`. Version 0.12.9 from 16.09.2026, MIT license.
Who it is for. For people who keep notes in Obsidian and want to search and extend them from an agent without leaving the program.
Good fit when
- You need an MCP server working inside Obsidian
- You need note search and a graph for an agent
- You need installation through the Obsidian plugin catalog
Not a fit when
- You cannot let an agent write to the notes vault
- You need a server outside Obsidian: this one works inside the program
Example request
Find the notes related to the Alpha project and add a section with the results of today's meetingMCP
- Transport
- http
- Authentication
- API key
Limitations
The agent reads and writes notes in the vault, so access is extended: make a copy of the vault before work. The server listens on a local address and is protected by an API key, do not publish the key. The Obsidian program must be running.
How to disable. Disable the plugin in Obsidian and remove the server entry from the client and revoke the API key.
