What it does
pgmoneta MCP connects an AI assistant to pgmoneta, a backup and restore solution for PostgreSQL. The server is written in Rust on top of the rmcp library and logs in to the pgmoneta server with SCRAM-SHA-256. Before launch, pgmoneta must run in remote admin mode with a management port, and your user must be in the users list. Three utilities ship in the box. `pgmoneta-mcp-admin` maintains the users file, `pgmoneta-mcp-client` runs tools interactively, and `pgmoneta-mcp-inspector` gives a structured view of what the server exposes. The client talks to a language model over the OpenAI API, and the documentation names `orangu-server` for a local model. The server reads `pgmoneta_mcp.conf`: the MCP port (8000 by default), the pgmoneta management host and port, and the Prometheus metrics port. A launch looks like this: `pgmoneta-mcp-server -c pgmoneta-mcp.conf -u pgmoneta-mcp-users.conf`. In VS Code the server is added with the MCP: Add Server command, after which you can ask Copilot chat, for example, for the latest backup information.

Not a fit when
- Backups are made by pgBackRest, Barman or another tool: the server talks to pgmoneta only
- Enabling pgmoneta remote administration and creating a user is not possible
- You need a ready binary package: the server is built from Rust source

Limitations
- It installs only from source: Rust, Cargo, `rst2man`, `pandoc` and `texlive` are required.
- pgmoneta must run in remote admin mode with a configured management port. The pgmoneta master key is copied to `~/.pgmoneta-mcp/master.key`.
- The README does not list the server tools; `pgmoneta-mcp-inspector` shows the list.
- The GPL-3.0 license sets its own conditions on distributing changes.
How to disable. Stop the `pgmoneta-mcp-server` process and remove the server from the MCP settings in VS Code. The user in pgmoneta can be deleted separately and the master key copy erased from `~/.pgmoneta-mcp`.
