Sequential Thinking MCP Server

A local MCP server that keeps a staged journal of an agent's reasoning with persistent sessions, decisions and evidence

MCP server

Medium risk

We rate an entry medium when the tool runs code, makes network calls or reads project files. Check what exactly it does before installing.

Why this level

  • Runs a local server and writes a journal to files
All reasons and checks

arben-adm/mcp-sequential-thinking

Install

In your terminal, with SkillFoxx CLI

npx skillfoxx add mcp/sequential-thinking-mcp-server

Detects the agents on your machine, checks the risk and pins the version.

Other ways to install

Run in a terminal

claude mcp add --transport stdio sequential-thinking -- uvx mcp-sequential-thinking

Or add to the file .mcp.json, in the project

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "sequential-thinking": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "mcp-sequential-thinking"
      ]
    }
  }
}

If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcpServers key.

Install in Cursor

The button opens the agent and offers to add the server. If nothing happens, copy the config below.

Add to the file ~/.cursor/mcp.json, for all projects

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "sequential-thinking": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "mcp-sequential-thinking"
      ]
    }
  }
}

If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcpServers key. For a single project, put the same block into .cursor/mcp.json.

Install in VS Code

The button opens the agent and offers to add the server. If nothing happens, copy the config below.

Run in a terminal

code --add-mcp '{"name":"sequential-thinking","type":"stdio","command":"uvx","args":["mcp-sequential-thinking"]}'

Or add to the file .vscode/mcp.json, in the project

{
  "servers": {
    "sequential-thinking": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "mcp-sequential-thinking"
      ]
    }
  }
}

If the file already exists, add the server inside the servers key.

Run in a terminal

codex mcp add sequential-thinking -- uvx mcp-sequential-thinking

Or add to the file ~/.codex/config.toml, for all projects

[mcp_servers.sequential-thinking]
command = "uvx"
args = ["mcp-sequential-thinking"]

If the file already exists, append the block to the end.

Run in a terminal

gemini mcp add -s user sequential-thinking uvx mcp-sequential-thinking

Or add to the file ~/.gemini/settings.json, for all projects

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "sequential-thinking": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "mcp-sequential-thinking"
      ]
    }
  }
}

If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcpServers key.

Add to the file ~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json, for all projects

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "sequential-thinking": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "mcp-sequential-thinking"
      ]
    }
  }
}

If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcpServers key. Legacy Cascade keeps the MCP config in ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json.

Formerly Windsurf.

Add to the file cline_mcp_settings.json, for all projects

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "sequential-thinking": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "mcp-sequential-thinking"
      ]
    }
  }
}

If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcpServers key. Open the settings file in Cline: MCP Servers tab, Configure MCP Servers.

Add to the file .roo/mcp.json, in the project

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "sequential-thinking": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "mcp-sequential-thinking"
      ]
    }
  }
}

If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcpServers key.

A fork of Roo Code, same .roo folders.

Add to the file opencode.json, in the project

{
  "mcp": {
    "sequential-thinking": {
      "type": "local",
      "command": [
        "uvx",
        "mcp-sequential-thinking"
      ]
    }
  }
}

If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcp key.

Add to the file ~/.config/zed/settings.json, for all projects

{
  "context_servers": {
    "sequential-thinking": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "mcp-sequential-thinking"
      ]
    }
  }
}

If the file already exists, add the server inside the context_servers key.

Add to the file .codeassistant/mcp.json, in the project

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "sequential-thinking": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "mcp-sequential-thinking"
      ]
    }
  }
}

If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcpServers key.

You will need: uv

Checked against the repository on Sep 25, 2026, commit 4f71b39.

Text for your agent

Add the MCP server via uvx: command uvx, argument mcp-sequential-thinking. It needs uv installed.

Other ways from the author
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "sequential-thinking": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": ["mcp-sequential-thinking"]
    }
  }
}

uvx fetches the package from PyPI and runs it, no clone or venv needed.

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.

What it does

The server gives the agent a structured thinking journal: thoughts are placed into stages such as problem definition, research, analysis and synthesis, and written to an append-only log. Each thought is schema-validated, and session history survives a restart and recovers after a crash. Sessions can be exported and imported to reuse a line of reasoning or resume an interrupted task. The server does not evaluate or improve the reasoning itself, which stays with the model; it only records and organizes the process. Storage is local and it runs over stdio.

Who it is for. For developers and analysts who want an agent to keep a transparent, resumable line of reasoning over a task.

Good fit when

  • You need a reproducible journal of how the agent reached a conclusion
  • The task is long and needs resuming between sessions
  • You want to store decisions and evidence locally

Not a fit when

  • You need a tool that improves reasoning rather than records it
  • You do not need persistent state

Example request

Work through this task in stages and record the reasoning so I can come back to it

Limitations

The server only records and organizes the thought process; it does not evaluate or generate reasoning, which the calling model does. It needs Python 3.10 and the uv package manager. Storage is local, with no sync across machines.

How to disable. Remove the sequential-thinking server from your MCP config.

MCP

Transport
stdio
Authentication
not required

Security check

  • Runs a local server and writes a journal to files

README in short

The README describes the MCP server as a thinking journal with stages, schema validation and an append-only log. It stresses the server records the process but does not evaluate or improve the reasoning. There is session export and import, crash recovery, strict typing and Pydantic validation. Install is recommended via uvx from PyPI, with pip and repo options. It needs Python 3.10 and uv. MIT licensed.

FAQ

Does it make reasoning better?

No, it only records and organizes the thought process by stage; the reasoning stays with the model.

Does a session survive a restart?

Yes, the append-only log survives restarts and recovers after a crash, and sessions can be exported.
