Broad access
Why this level
- ServiceNow credentials sit in the server environment and give access to incidents, users and configuration
- Enabled write flags let the agent create and change records, CIs and server-side scripts on the instance
- Incident data goes to the client's model, and on a production instance a scripting mistake affects the whole company
Install
- Works in
In your terminal, with SkillFoxx CLI
npx skillfoxx add mcp/servicenow-mcp-server-nowaikitDetects the agents on your machine, shows the access level and pins the version.

What it does
NowAIKit is an MCP server that connects Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Cursor, Copilot and other clients to a ServiceNow instance. It exposes over 500 tools across ITSM, ITOM, CMDB, HRSD, CSM, Flow Designer, scripting and portal, plus 26 AI capabilities. A request like "how many active P1 incidents are open right now" turns into tool calls and an answer. By default the server is read-only. Writes to ITSM, the catalog and users are switched on by `WRITE_ENABLED`, CMDB changes by `CMDB_WRITE_ENABLED`, and scripting of business rules and script includes by `SCRIPTING_ENABLED`. Each tier is off separately, so an accidental change to a production instance is hard. ATF test runs and Now Assist tools have their own flags, `ATF_ENABLED` and `NOW_ASSIST_ENABLED`. The `MCP_TOOL_PACKAGE` variable loads a role-based set instead of all tools: `service_desk`, `change_coordinator`, `platform_developer`, `integration_engineer` and others. This saves model context. The server supports stdio, SSE and HTTP transports, Basic and OAuth authentication, and several instances through `instances.json`. Versions 4.4 to 4.7 added impact analysis (`list_table_config`, `find_field_references`, `find_script_references`), local sync of artifacts to files and the `aggregate_report` report. The `npx nowaikit setup` command finds installed clients and writes their configuration itself.
Who it is for. For ServiceNow admins and developers and for service desk teams who want to query an instance in plain words and delegate ITSM and CMDB routine to an agent.
Good fit when
- You need quick summaries of incidents, changes and CMDB state without opening the ServiceNow interface
- Before editing a table, field or script you want to see what depends on it: impact analysis tools do that
- A platform developer asks the agent to write business rules and script includes, with `SCRIPTING_ENABLED` on only for a dev instance
- You need a role-based tool set such as `service_desk` so hundreds of extra tools do not bloat the context
- You work with several instances (dev, test, prod) described in `instances.json`
Not a fit when
- You have no ServiceNow instance: for trial use a free Personal Developer Instance at developer.servicenow.com
- Company policy forbids sending incident data to external models and you have no local model
- You need an OSI-approved license: the code ships under Elastic License 2.0, which is source-available
- You need one simple table operation: the ServiceNow REST API is enough without a layer of hundreds of tools
Example request
Show the five most recent changes in ServiceNow, then find which scripts reference the `u_priority` field on the `incident` table.MCP

Environment variables
SERVICENOW_INSTANCE_URLrequired- Instance URL without a trailing slash, for example https://yourcompany.service-now.com
SERVICENOW_AUTH_METHOD- Sign-in method: basic or oauth
SERVICENOW_BASIC_USERNAME- User name for Basic sign-in
SERVICENOW_BASIC_PASSWORDsecret- Password for Basic sign-in
SERVICENOW_OAUTH_CLIENT_SECRETsecret- OAuth app secret from the ServiceNow application registry
WRITE_ENABLED- Enables writes to ITSM, catalog, users and agile, false by default
CMDB_WRITE_ENABLED- Enables CMDB CI writes, requires `WRITE_ENABLED`
SCRIPTING_ENABLED- Enables managing business rules and script includes, requires `WRITE_ENABLED`
MCP_TOOL_PACKAGE- Role-based tool set such as service_desk, full by default
Limitations
- It needs Node.js 20 or newer and access to a ServiceNow instance with a Basic or OAuth account. For production the documentation recommends OAuth.
- Writes, CMDB changes, scripting, ATF and Now Assist are switched on by separate environment variables, and all are off by default. Now Assist tools work only with a Now Assist license on the instance.
- The code ships under Elastic License 2.0, a source-available license. Install the package only from npm (`nowaikit`) or from nowaikit.com: the project warns about copycat zip downloads on GitHub.
- The full set of hundreds of tools spends model context, so set `MCP_TOOL_PACKAGE` for a specific role.
- The NowAIKit Cloud edition and the VS Code and browser extensions belong to the project platform but ship separately.
How to disable. Delete the `nowaikit` entry from the MCP client config and run `npm uninstall -g nowaikit`. To keep the server but forbid any change, leave `WRITE_ENABLED=false`, `CMDB_WRITE_ENABLED=false` and `SCRIPTING_ENABLED=false`. Disable the ServiceNow account given to the server on the instance side.
FAQ
How do I connect ServiceNow to Claude over MCP?
Run `npm install -g nowaikit`, then `npx nowaikit setup`: the wizard finds clients and writes the config. You need the instance URL and Basic or OAuth credentials, then restart the client.
Can the agent change data in ServiceNow?
Not by default, the server is read-only. `WRITE_ENABLED=true` switches writes on, `CMDB_WRITE_ENABLED=true` adds CMDB changes, and scripting needs `SCRIPTING_ENABLED=true` on top of the write tier.
How do I avoid flooding the context with hundreds of tools?
Set `MCP_TOOL_PACKAGE`: for example `service_desk`, `change_coordinator`, `platform_developer` or `portal_developer`. Only the set for that role loads instead of all 500 or more.
Can I work with several ServiceNow instances?
Yes. Put the path of an `instances.json` file in `SN_INSTANCES_CONFIG` and the server can address dev, test and prod. The multi-instance guide is in `docs/MULTI_INSTANCE.md`.
What license does NowAIKit use?
Elastic License 2.0: the source is available but the license is not fully open. Install is supported through npm (`nowaikit`) and the nowaikit.com site.
