Broad access
Why this level
- Through MCP the agent gets access to your Butterbase project: it applies schemas and access policies, deploys apps and moves them between regions
- The skills work with Stripe Connect payments and service keys
- Integrations send emails and SMS on behalf of your app
Install
- Works in
In your terminal, with SkillFoxx CLI
npx skillfoxx add plugins/butterbase-skillsDetects the agents on your machine, shows the access level and pins the version.

What it does
The plugin connects Claude Code to Butterbase, a hosted backend for apps with a Postgres database, auth and serverless functions. File storage, an AI gateway and realtime are there too. It ships 39 skills, 34 slash commands and a `.mcp.json` file that configures the connection to the MCP server at `https://api.butterbase.ai/mcp` with nearly forty tools. Each skill handles a separate task. `build-app` builds an app from scratch, `schema-design` designs a schema, and `deploy-frontend` puts a frontend on a live URL. `debug-rls` finds why users see each other's data, and `function-dev` writes serverless functions and scheduled jobs. `payments` sets up Stripe Connect, `migrations` moves an app between regions, and separate skills wire up email, SMS, Slack and CRM. The `/butterbase-skills:journey` command walks through the stages from idea and database schema to the frontend and a check of the deployed app. Each stage also runs on its own, and the last, optional one submits the app to a hackathon.
Who it is for. For developers and founders who build an app on Butterbase with Claude Code and want to go from idea to launch step by step.
Good fit when
- You need to build an app with auth and a database from scratch and deploy it right away: `build-app` and `deploy`
- Users see each other's data and you must sort out RLS policies: `debug-rls`
- You need file uploads, realtime subscriptions or a scheduled serverless function
- You are setting up subscription payments through Stripe Connect
- You want step-by-step guidance from idea to a verified deployed app: `/butterbase-skills:journey`
Not a fit when
- You do not use Butterbase: the plugin works only with it and needs an account at butterbase.ai
- You need your own backend on your own server: the plugin manages the hosted Butterbase service
- The agent must not get rights to deploy and handle payments: the plugin opens such actions
- You need to work offline: the tools call the MCP server over HTTPS
Example request
Build a notes app with Google sign-in and file storage and deploy it to Butterbase.Limitations
The plugin works only with Butterbase and needs an account at butterbase.ai. The skills and commands are in English and built for Claude Code and Claude Desktop. In other MCP clients the agent gets the server's tools but not the plugin's skills.
The plugin's CLAUDE.md file adds always-on context to every session, so some tokens go to it even in tasks unrelated to Butterbase.
When developing Butterbase itself locally, the server address defaults to `http://localhost:4000/mcp`, set by the `CONTROL_API_URL` variable.
How to disable. Remove the plugin with `claude plugin uninstall butterbase-skills@butterbase-skills` and the MCP entry with `claude mcp remove butterbase`.
FAQ
How do I install Butterbase Skills in Claude Code?
Add the source with `claude plugin marketplace add https://github.com/butterbase-ai/butterbase-skills`, then run `claude plugin install butterbase-skills@butterbase-skills`. Skills and context load when Claude Code starts.
Do I need a Butterbase API key?
For Claude Code an OAuth sign-in is enough: after installing, restart Claude Code and run `/mcp` or `claude mcp login butterbase`. The `.mcp.json` snippet for a manual connection sends the server a key from the `BUTTERBASE_API_KEY` variable.
How do I connect Butterbase to Cursor or Codex?
The `npx @butterbase/cli mcp install` command sets up MCP in Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, JetBrains, Codex, Gemini CLI and other clients and prints OAuth hints for each. The plugin's skills are built for Claude Code and Claude Desktop.
What does the journey command do?
It runs the stages in order: first the idea, plan and environment preflight, then schema, RLS policies and auth, then storage, functions and the frontend. At the end it checks the deployed app. Any stage runs on its own, for example `journey-schema`.
What stays after I remove the plugin?
Apps you already deployed to Butterbase stay in your account on the service. Removing the plugin takes away only the skills, commands and MCP entry from Claude Code.

README in short
The plugin's `CLAUDE.md` file sets always-on context: environment variables, workflows, patterns and documentation references. Alongside the plugin there are the `@butterbase/sdk` TypeScript SDK and the `@butterbase/cli` CLI, and the `butterbase_docs` tool on the MCP server returns reference docs on a topic such as auth, storage or functions.
