How we review

Minimal accessThe tool runs nothing and makes no network calls.

  • The agent can create, change and delete reviews and comments in the app; it does not delete working copies of repositories.

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.

What it does

GitWarren is a desktop app and browser interface for reviewing local git repositories. A review compares two refs like a pull request, and staged, unstaged and untracked working tree changes are folded into the diff. The plugin for Claude Code, Gemini CLI and other agents adds an MCP server of seventeen tools and a note on when to open a review. The agent creates a review, reads your comments, replies in the thread and resolves what it fixed. The `/review` command opens the review of the current branch and hands over the link. Everything is stored in one SQLite file on your computer, with no account and no telemetry. Repositories on other machines are reached over SSH, through `wsl.exe` or on a tailnet.

Who it is for. Developers who delegate work to Claude Code or Codex and want to read the diff and leave remarks before the changes become a commit.

Good fit when

  • An agent finished a task and the changes sit in the working tree uncommitted.
  • Line remarks need to reach the agent rather than be retold in chat.
  • An agent's branch on a remote machine is read from a laptop over SSH.
  • A Markdown document is edited with the agent and commented paragraph by paragraph.

Not a fit when

  • Review runs on GitHub or GitLab with a team.
  • A diff inside the agent's answer is enough and no separate app is wanted.
  • Comments must live in a shared cloud system.

Example request

Open a review of the current branch against main including uncommitted changes, then read my comments and reply to each.

Limitations

Git is required on the machine; the desktop version is built on Electron, and machines without a screen use `gitwarren serve`. There is deliberately no `get_review_diff` tool: the agent reads the diff and history with git commands. `guiUrl` links in agent answers open only where GitWarren is running, otherwise the browser refuses the connection. The license is GPL-3.0 and contributors must sign a CLA. Other limits are listed in `docs/limitations.md`.

How to disable. Remove the plugin in the client's plugin manager and close and uninstall the app as usual. Review data sits in a SQLite file in the app data directory and is deleted by hand.

FAQ

What does the agent do through MCP?

It manages the list of repositories and reviews, reads comment threads, adds comments, replies and resolves them. `remove_repository` never touches working copies, it only stops tracking them.

How do I install the plugin without Claude Code?

For Gemini CLI: `gemini extensions install https://github.com/klarluft/gitwarren-app`. `npx skills add klarluft/gitwarren-app` installs the note alone for any agent. Cursor, Codex, VS Code and Kiro read the same repository from their plugin screens.

Are uncommitted changes visible?

Yes. If the branch is checked out in a worktree, GitWarren finds it and folds staged, unstaged and untracked changes into the diff.

Where does the data go?

Nowhere: reviews are stored in one SQLite file, with no account and no telemetry. The desktop app's only outbound request is the update check.

Does it work without a graphical shell?

Yes. The `gitwarren serve` command serves the same interface in a browser. On a machine with no screen only the headless half runs, and reviews are viewed from another computer over SSH, `wsl.exe` or a tailnet.

README in short

The README explains review of uncommitted work, installing the app, CLI and plugin, the MCP tools and working with other machines. For agents there is `llms-install.md`, the `skills/gitwarren` skill and the `/review` command.
