What it does
phd-skills is a Claude Code plugin for researchers: reproducing arXiv papers, debugging runs by facts, comparing experiments. The author builds it around guardrails, each of which traces to a real mistake in doctoral work. It includes Shell hooks. Installation: `claude plugin marketplace add fcakyon/phd-skills`, then `claude plugin install phd-skills@phd-skills`. Version 1.3.0 from 09.05.2026, MIT license. You can also run `/phd-skills:setup`.
Who it is for. For researchers and PhD students who reproduce papers and run experiments with an agent.
Good fit when
- You need to reproduce the results of an arXiv paper
- You need run debugging by facts and not by guesses
- You need to compare experiments
Not a fit when
- You cannot add hooks to Claude Code
- You need proven benefit: the author's citation reference is self-assessment
Example request
Reproduce table 2 from an arXiv paper, record the differences from the authors' numbers and find the cause from the run logsLimitations
It includes Shell hooks that fire while Claude Code works, so access is extended: read them before installing. The author's citation mention in the README is the project's self-assessment. The plugin works right after installation and extras are turned on in the setup wizard.
How to disable. Remove the plugin with claude plugin uninstall or through the plugin manager and the phd-skills marketplace.
