What it does
bookforge takes an agent from a topic to a PDF with the anatomy of a printed book: cover, contents with leaders, chapter openers, running heads and imprint. Text is written only in markdown, while six style packs and scripts do the typesetting. Quality is held by check gates: a PDF that fails never reaches the `final/` folder. Pagination rules come from measurements of commercial books (`references/pagination.md`), and a density check catches both pointless gaps and padding. The v2.0.0 release carries a demo and three sample PDFs.
Who it is for. Authors producing lead magnets, guides and short books who want a PDF with publishing structure and no manual layout.
Good fit when
- You need a PDF handbook or guide from notes and an outline.
- You want one style across several books and repeatable layout.
- Pages must not be half-empty and should be checked automatically.
- The book is business or practical in format and needs ready styles.
Not a fit when
- You need a scientific text with complex formulas and a bibliography.
- You need offset printing with a nonstandard layout.
- Python and Chromium cannot be installed.
Example request
Build an e-book on "prompt patterns for practitioners" in the practical style, 40 pages, and show the check-gate results.Limitations
The main documentation is in Korean, with a separate English version (`README.en.md`). Python 3 with PyMuPDF and markdown-it-py is required, and some styles and diagrams also need Playwright with Chromium. The model writes the book content, so facts need checking. The last commit is dated September 2026. Building a book takes a lot of time and resources, and the gates may reject a file several times until the layout rules are met.
How to disable. Delete the `bookforge` links from `~/.claude/skills`, `~/.codex/skills` and `~/.agents/skills`, then the repository folder. Remove the Python packages and Playwright separately.
FAQ
How many styles?
Six style packs, and the README shows real examples for each, nine books in total.
What do the quality gates do?
They check the PDF against a list of rules, including the style contract, font scale and diagram placement, and keep a failing file out of `final/`.
Which agents are supported?
Claude Code and OpenAI Codex, plus the `~/.agents/skills` directory.
Is a browser needed?
Styles `insight` and `magazine` and books with diagrams need Playwright with Chromium, per the README.
Where do finished books go?
Only to the `final/` folder: a file lands there after passing the quality gates.

README in short
Content is written in markdown, with layout and quality control left to scripts and six styles. A PDF appears only after passing all gates.
