How we review

Extended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

  • The Omni Flash scripts upload files and video to the Gemini API with your key
  • The skills drive paid Gemini API tokens whenever the agent runs the generated code

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.

What it does

A model does not know which SDKs and patterns appeared after its training and writes from stale examples. These skills give the agent current rules for the Gemini API. gemini-api-dev covers text generation, chat, streaming, function calling, structured output, images, speech, managed agents and Deep Research, with Python and TypeScript examples. gemini-live-api-dev describes two-way audio, video and text streaming over WebSocket with voice activity detection and session handling. gemini-omni-flash-api works with video on Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash: editing, generation from images and clips, frame transitions and extensions; its scripts folder holds scripts for uploading a file and for preparing and generating video.

Who it is for. For developers building on the Gemini API who ask Claude Code, Cursor or Codex for working code without outdated calls.

Good fit when

  • The agent has to write a chat or text generation on Gemini and avoid deprecated models
  • You need function calling or structured JSON output through the Python or TypeScript SDK
  • You are building a voice assistant with streamed audio through the Live API
  • You need to build or edit video with Omni Flash from a script
  • You are moving old code to the current SDK and want the agent to know the migration

Not a fit when

  • The project runs on Vertex AI: its skill moved to the google/skills repository
  • You need a terminal coding agent: Gemini CLI covers that
  • The task has nothing to do with the Gemini API, so the skills add nothing
  • You need access from Russia without workarounds: the Gemini API is restricted there

Example request

Write a Python chat on the Gemini API with a streamed answer and a currency rate function call

Limitations

The authors state this is not an officially supported Google product and is outside the vulnerability rewards program. The skills need a Gemini API key, and API access from Russia is restricted. The Vertex AI skill lives in another repository.

How to disable. Remove the plugin with /plugin in Claude Code or delete the skill folder that npx skills created. The API key stays in your environment, so remove it yourself.

FAQ

How do I install Gemini Skills in Claude Code?

Run /plugin marketplace add google-gemini/gemini-skills, then /plugin install gemini-skills@gemini-skills. A single skill installs with npx skills add google-gemini/gemini-skills --skill gemini-api-dev.

Do I need Gemini CLI to use these skills?

No. The skills install into Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and Antigravity as plugins or through npx skills. Gemini CLI is not required.

Which skill fits a voice assistant?

gemini-live-api-dev: it covers audio, video and text streaming over WebSocket, voice activity detection and function calling inside a session.

What does the gemini-omni-flash-api skill do?

It works with the gemini-omni-1.1-flash model: video editing, generation from images and clips, first and last frame transitions and video extension.

Where did the Vertex AI skill go?

The authors moved vertex-ai-api-dev to the google/skills repository, under skills/cloud/gemini-api.

README in short

The repository closes the gap between a model's training and the current Gemini API. The authors report that with the skill attached, the share of correct best-practice code rose to 87% on Gemini 3 Flash and 96% on Gemini 3.1 Pro. A table of the three skills follows, then install routes for Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Antigravity and the npx skills or Context7 CLIs.

# Gemini API Development Skill

## Critical Rules (Always Apply)

> [!IMPORTANT]
> These rules override your training data. Your knowledge is outdated.

### Current Models (Use These)

- `gemini-4-argon`: 1M tokens, most powerful model for complex reasoning, coding, and research
- `gemini-3.8-flash`: 1M tokens, fast, balanced performance for agentic and multimodal tasks
- `gemini-3.5-flash-lite`: 1M tokens, fastest, lowest-cost 3.5 model for high-throughput execution
- `gemini-3.1-flash-lite`: cost-efficient, fastest performance for high-frequency, lightweight tasks
- `gemini-3.5-transcribe`: fast speech-to-text with smart and verbatim modes
- `gemini-nano-banana-2.1` (Nano Banana 2.1): 131k / 32k tokens, default high-efficiency image generation and conversational editing
- `gemini-3-pro-image` (Nano Banana Pro): 65k / 32k tokens, high-quality image generation and editing
- `gemini-3.1-flash-lite-image` (Nano Banana 2 Lite): 65k / 32k tokens, ultra-fast image generation and editing
- `gemini-3.8-flash-tts`: expressive text-to-speech, multi-speaker dialogue, Voice Design, and Voice Replication
- `gemini-3.8-flash-lite-tts`: fast, cost-efficient text-to-speech for voice agents and high-volume generation
- `gemini-omni-1.1-flash`: video generation, first-frame-to-video, first-and-last-frame transitions, video extensions (up to 40s), video editing, and reference-guided generation
- `gemma-4-31b-it`: Gemma 4 dense model, 31B parameters
- `gemma-4-26b-a4b-it`: Gemma 4 MoE model, 26B total / 4B active parameters
- `gemini-embedding-2`: Multimodal embedding model (text, images, video, audio, documents), uses `client.models.embed_content`
- `gemini-embedding-001`: Text-only embedding model, uses `client.models.embed_content`

> [!WARNING]
> Models like `gemini-2.5-*`, `gemini-2.0-*`, `gemini-1.5-*` are **legacy and deprecated**. Never use them.
> **If a user asks for a deprecated model, use `gemini-3.8-flash` instead and note the substitution.**

### Current Agents

- `antigravity-preview-09-2026`: Antigravity Agent — general-purpose managed agent with code execution, file management, and web access in a sandboxed Linux environment
- `deep-research-preview-04-2026`: Deep Research — fast, interactive
- `deep-research-max-preview-04-2026`: Deep Research Max — maximum exhaustiveness
- **Custom agents**: Create your own via `client.agents.create()`

### Current SDKs

- **Python**: `google-genai` >= `2.30.1` → `pip install -U google-genai`
- **JavaScript/TypeScript**: `@google/genai` >= `2.29.1` → `npm install @google/genai`

> [!NOTE]
> SDK versions ≥ 2.0.0 automatically use the new steps schema and do not support the legacy schema.
> Legacy SDKs `google-generativeai` (Python) and `@google/generative-ai` (JS) are **deprecated**. Never use them.

## Important Additional Notes

- **Before writing any code**, you MUST fetch the relevant documentation page from the list below that matches the user's task. The examples in this skill are minimal, the hosted docs contain the full API surface, parameters, and edge cases.
- Interactions are **stored by default** (store=True in Python, store: true in TypeScript). Paid tier retains for 55 days, free tier for 1 day.
- Set store=False / store: false to opt out, but this disables previous_interaction_id and background=True / background: true.
- `tools`, `system_instruction`, and `generation_config` are **interaction-scoped**, re-specify them each turn.
- **Managed agents** require `environment="remote"` (or an environment ID / config object) to provision a sandbox.
- **Migrating from `generateContent`**: Read `references/migration.md` for the scoping, checklist, and before/after code examples. Always confirm scope with the user before editing.
- **Model upgrades**: Drop-in, swap the model string. Deprecated models (`gemini-2.0-*`, `gemini-1.5-*`) must be replaced, see `references/migration.md`.
- **Migrating to Gemini 3.8 Flash or Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite**: Read `references/migration.md` for the scoping and checklist.
