How we review

Extended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

  • Page URLs and their content go to the third-party Jina AI cloud
  • The skill lets the agent run shell commands and access the network

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.

What it does

The jina-cli skill teaches an agent to call the jina command-line tool. The Go utility wraps the cloud Jina AI Reader service. The read command fetches a page by URL and returns it in a form a language model can digest. The search command searches the web and pulls in the pages it finds. Image captions on a page can be switched on with the `--with-alt` flag. For single-page apps there is waiting for a given element and picking part of the page by CSS selector, so the agent gets only the useful block. Settings live in ~/.jina-reader/config.yaml. Command-line flags take priority, environment variables come next, and the file is read last.

Who it is for. For people working in Claude Code who want the agent to read articles, documentation and social posts by URL on its own, with no manual copying.

Good fit when

  • The agent must read a long article or documentation page by URL and work with it as Markdown
  • You need to parse an X (Twitter) post that the site serves only through a heavy interface
  • A file holds a list of links and every page should be read with one command
  • The agent needs fresh information from the web and search should return page contents right away
  • A page is built with JavaScript and you must wait for a given block or cut it out with a selector

Not a fit when

  • The page sits behind a login or an internal network: the request goes to the Jina cloud and the service cannot open it
  • The content is confidential: the page address and text pass through a third-party service
  • You need a full site crawl that keeps structure: the tool reads single pages and search results
  • The environment has no network access

Example request

Read this article with jina and summarize it in five points: https://example.com/post

Limitations

The tool works through the cloud endpoints r.jina.ai and s.jina.ai, so internet access is required and a third-party service sees the pages you read. Without an API key, rate limits apply. Whether the service is reachable from Russia was not checked for this card. The repository was last updated in March 2026.

The `--cookie` flag hands the cookie value to the service, so avoid sending session data there. The documentation is written in Chinese and English.

How to disable. Delete the ~/.claude/skills/jina-cli directory so the agent forgets the skill, and the jina binary from ~/.local/bin. Settings live separately in ~/.jina-reader and can be removed together with the key.

FAQ

How do I install jina-cli in Claude Code?

Run npx skills add https://github.com/geekjourneyx/jina-cli --skill jina-cli. The skill calls the jina command, so install the tool itself with the install.sh script too: it detects the system, downloads the binary and places it in ~/.local/bin or ~/bin.

Does jina-cli need an API key?

No, the tool works without one. A key from jina.ai raises the request limit. Set it with jina config set api_key, the JINA_API_KEY variable or the `-k` flag.

Which formats does the read command return?

The service returns Markdown, HTML, plain text or a screenshot link, chosen with the `--format` flag. The tool itself prints the result as JSON or Markdown (the `-o` flag) and can save it to a file with `--output-file`.

How is jina-cli different from the Jina AI remote MCP server?

jina-cli calls the same cloud Reader and Search endpoints from the shell and needs no MCP client. The MCP server connects to an agent as a set of tools and covers more of the service.

How do I read many links at once with jina-cli?

Put the links into a text file and run `jina read --file urls.txt`. The tool reads every page in one call.

README in short

The documentation describes three independent install paths: a skill for OpenClaw, a skill for Claude Code and a terminal binary. It includes a settings table with environment variables and examples for batch reading, site-limited search and proxy use.
