Broad access
Why this level
- Through MCP the agent creates, edits, publishes and runs workflows in your n8n instance, and workflows reach your services
- The plugin installs SessionStart, PreToolUse and PostToolUse hooks, which are shell scripts that run on agent calls
- The agent deals with n8n credentials and keys, so tokens must stay out of node text fields
Install
- Works in
In your terminal, with SkillFoxx CLI
npx skillfoxx add skills/official-n8n-skillsDetects the agents on your machine, shows the access level and pins the version.

What it does
Official n8n Skills is a set of rules for an agent that works with n8n through the instance-level MCP server built into n8n. The MCP can create and edit workflows, sort them into folders and projects, and build n8n Agents. The skills teach the agent to get it right the first time. There are 13 topical skills covering the workflow lifecycle: sub-workflows for reuse, expressions, loops and pagination, AI agents, error handling, credentials, Data Tables, debugging, node configuration, Code nodes and binary data. A meta-skill, using-n8n-skills-official, routes the agent to the right one at the start of every n8n task. The repository also holds more than 50 reference docs and examples that load on demand: per-node gotchas, decision trees, copy-ready workflow JSON and TypeScript SDK snippets. The Claude Code plugin ships a SessionStart hook that loads the protocol and a compact reference for every n8n MCP tool each session. PreToolUse hooks nudge the agent to consult the matching skill before high-impact MCP calls such as creating, updating, testing or running a workflow. The plugin wires up the n8n-mcp server itself and asks for your instance URL at install.
Who it is for. For people who build automations in n8n Cloud or on their own server and hand workflow building to an agent: developers, automation builders and small teams.
Good fit when
- The agent builds workflows through MCP and you want it to validate before publishing and re-check connections after each edit
- Repeating logic should move into a sub-workflow, with a search for existing ones before building new ones
- A workflow walks through API pages or processes batches of records and needs proper loops and pagination
- You are building an AI agent on the LangChain Agent node: tools, system prompt, structured output
- Tokens and keys must live in the n8n credential system instead of node text fields
Not a fit when
- You have no n8n instance with the instance-level MCP server enabled at version 2.2.0 or newer: the skills are written around its tools
- You assemble workflows by hand in the n8n editor and no agent is involved
- You want node and template reference served by a third-party server: separate n8n-mcp based projects cover that
- You use Cursor or another agent with plugin support: the authors are asking for help with those harnesses and ship no ready packaging yet
Example request
Build an n8n workflow: a webhook takes a request, nodes validate the fields, an AI agent classifies it, and the result goes to Telegram. Load the relevant n8n skills and validate the workflow before publishingLimitations
You need an n8n instance on any plan, Cloud or self-hosted, with the instance-level MCP server enabled (Settings, Instance-level MCP). The minimum is n8n 2.2.0; the latest stable works best. Codex needs version 0.142.0 or newer and the MCP server is added by hand.
The plugin adds its own n8n-mcp connection. If you already run the n8n MCP another way, disable the duplicate from /mcp. Sign-in goes through the browser. Hooks and skills track the MCP version, so when tool names drift, update the plugin and n8n itself. A plain skills install has no SessionStart hook, so an AGENTS.md hint is needed.
How to disable. In Claude Code, disable or remove the plugin through /plugin; the n8n-mcp connection can also be switched off separately in /mcp. In Codex, remove the plugin through the plugin manager and delete the n8n-mcp server from MCP settings.
FAQ
How do I install the official n8n skills in Claude Code?
In a claude session run /plugin marketplace add n8n-io/skills, then /plugin install n8n-skills@n8n-io and give your n8n instance URL without a path. After /reload-plugins open /mcp, choose n8n-mcp and click Authenticate: sign-in happens in the browser.
Which n8n version do these skills need?
At least n8n 2.2.0, on any plan, Cloud or self-hosted. Instance-level MCP must be enabled in the instance settings. The authors recommend the latest stable release because MCP tool names change and the skills follow them.
How do I connect the n8n skills to Codex?
Run codex plugin marketplace add n8n-io/skills and codex plugin add n8n-skills@n8n-io, restart Codex and approve the hook trust prompt. Codex cannot configure the MCP server on its own: add it with codex mcp add n8n-mcp --url https://<your-n8n-domain>/mcp-server/http. Codex 0.142.0 or newer is required.
Why add a hint about n8n to AGENTS.md?
Plugins load the entry skill through a SessionStart hook. A plain install with npx skills add n8n-io/skills has no hook, so AGENTS.md states that any work with workflows, nodes, expressions or n8n MCP tools starts with using-n8n-skills-official.
How is this different from community n8n kits?
The n8n team made these skills for the instance-level MCP server built into n8n. Community projects such as n8n-skills and n8n-mcp go through a separate server with node and template reference, which is a different pairing.

README in short
The repository opens with the claim that the n8n MCP makes the connection and the skills set the standard. It then lists what is inside (the MCP connection, 13 skills, reference docs, hooks), the instance requirements and step-by-step installs for Claude Code in the terminal and the desktop app, Codex, and OpenCode in the terminal and the desktop app. For other platforms it points to skills.sh. A table of skills with their triggers closes the page, along with a request to open an issue before any pull request.

# Using n8n Skills
The official n8n MCP evolves over time, so tool names, parameters, and default behaviors can drift between versions. When you spot drift (a tool a skill names doesn't exist, a parameter shape doesn't match what `get_node_types` returns, or behavior differs from what the skill describes), suggest updating the skill and n8n instance to the latest stable.
## Non-negotiables
Three rules with no exceptions. Violating any produces workflows that look right but break in production.
1. **Invoke the relevant skill before any n8n action.** Not just MCP tool calls. Before writing SDK code, configuring a node, designing a workflow, wiring a connection, building an agent, or handling errors: invoke the matching skill via the Skill tool. This document is a router. The skill body has the actual rules. The PreToolUse hooks remind you on the highest-impact MCP calls if a plugin is installed. The responsibility is yours on everything else. Err on the side of reading extra documents.
2. **Validate AND verify before publishing.** `validate_workflow` before `publish_workflow`, and `get_workflow_details` after every create or update to check the `connections` object. Validation alone misses many issues documented in the skills that will silently break workflows.
3. **Tokens/secrets never go in text fields.** Always use the n8n credential system. If no native node exists, configure HTTP Request with the official credential type. See `n8n-credentials-and-security-official`.
## Lean on skills, not training data
n8n evolves faster than any model's training cutoff. Parameter names drift, new MCP tools land, defaults change, patterns get deprecated. Anything you "remember" is likely wrong, often silently.
Trust the skills + live MCP tools (`get_node_types`, `get_workflow_sdk_reference`, `get_workflow_best_practices`) over recollection. If a skill contradicts what you "know", trust the skill. If `get_node_types` contradicts a skill, trust the tool. Without this discipline you will ship workflows that look right and silently fail: parameter names that don't exist, renamed nodes, deprecated patterns.
Unless a user preference overrides it, err on the side of loading too many skills rather than too few. Even a 3-node webhook flow typically needs `n8n-node-configuration-official`, `n8n-expressions-official`, `n8n-error-handling-official`, and `n8n-workflow-lifecycle-official`. Nothing in n8n is too small for skills.
## Strong defaults (each skill owns its exceptions)
- **The Code node is a last resort.** Expression first, then arrow function inside Edit Fields, then Code. Code earns its place for multi-source aggregation, libraries, and stateful work. See `n8n-code-nodes-official`.
- **Anything reusable becomes a stateless sub-workflow.** Search existing ones via `search_workflows({ tags: ['subworkflow'] })` before building. See `n8n-subworkflows-official`.
<!-- TEMPORARY: n8n credits is n8n Cloud only for now and the coverage may expand; revisit this default and the cloud-only caveat when that changes. -->
- **Prefer n8n credits when the user has no credential preference.** For nodes it covers (check `list_n8n_connect_services`), n8n supplies the managed credential, so there's no setup step, much easier than the user provisioning their own. n8n Cloud only for now. See `n8n-credentials-and-security-official`.
## Red flags: thoughts that mean STOP and invoke
These rationalizations cause skills to be skipped. If you catch yourself thinking any of them, invoke the relevant skill via the Skill tool, **even if you "already read it" earlier in the session**.
| Thought | Action |
|---|---|
| "This workflow is simple, I'll just build it" | Invoke `n8n-workflow-lifecycle-official`. Most "simple" workflows are 10+ nodes by the time they ship. |
| "I'll add a Set node here to map these fields" | Invoke `n8n-expressions-official`. Set nodes feeding only 0 or 1 downstream consumer are the most common antipattern in this entire pack. |
