What it does

Prompt Architect turns a vague request into a structured prompt. Given a draft, the agent scores it from 1 to 10 on five criteria: clarity, specificity, context, completeness and structure. It then reports the mean score so the weak spots are visible. Next the skill identifies the intent behind the request and picks one of 31 frameworks grouped into seven intent types. CO-STAR suits content writing, RISEN suits multi-step procedures, and CTF or APE suit simple tasks. There are also schemes for reasoning and critique, such as Tree of Thought and Pre-Mortem. If two frameworks would give the same prompt, the skill picks the simpler one and says so. The agent gathers missing details with one or two questions at a time, with no long form. To recover a lost prompt from a finished result there is RPEF, and Reverse Role Prompting has the AI interview you before it does the task. The result comes with an explanation of what changed and is revised from your feedback. Each framework has a template in the assets/templates folder.

Who it is for. For developers and prompt engineers who want to improve requests to Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and other agents with proven schemes.

Good fit when

  • A prompt draft came out vague and you want a breakdown by criteria
  • An article or newsletter needs a structured request in a scheme such as CO-STAR
  • You have a good model answer but lost the original prompt
  • You want the model to interview you about the task before it does the work
  • A team needs consistently structured prompts for shared tasks

Not a fit when

  • The request already scores 7 or higher on every criterion: per the author, a framework is then often unnecessary
  • You need automatic prompt optimization against metrics or test sets: the skill works through dialogue and runs no experiments
  • The task is one-off and trivial, and extra questions would only slow you down
  • You use Windsurf without skill support: you will need the manual adapter from the adapters folder

Example request

Help me improve this prompt: write a technical blog post about migrating to Postgres.

Limitations

The quality of the result depends on the model the agent runs on and on how fully you answer the clarifying questions. The model assigns the five scores itself against a set scale, so they are its subjective judgment. Framework section headers are stripped from the final prompt, so the chosen scheme is often invisible in it.

The skill is written in English under the MIT license. In ChatGPT, skill upload is available only on some plans, such as Business, Enterprise and Edu.

How to disable. Delete the prompt-architect folder from .claude/skills or .agents/skills. If you installed the plugin, disable it with the Claude Code plugin commands.

FAQ

How do I install Prompt Architect in Claude Code?

Use `/install-skill https://github.com/ckelsoe/prompt-architect/tree/main/skills/prompt-architect`. There is also a route with updates: `/plugin marketplace add ckelsoe/prompt-architect`, then `/plugin install prompt-architect@prompt-architect-marketplace`.

How do I install the skill in Cursor, Gemini CLI or Copilot?

Run `npx @ckelsoe/prompt-architect`: the installer detects the agents on the machine and lets you choose. Manually, copy the skills/prompt-architect folder to ~/.agents/skills/prompt-architect.

How do the CO-STAR and RISEN frameworks differ?

By the skill's table, CO-STAR fits content creation and RISEN fits multi-step procedures. Both are rated high complexity. The other frameworks in the table are also tied to a task type and a complexity level.

Does the skill need internet access or an API key?

No. The skill is Markdown instructions and templates with no scripts or external dependencies. Internet access is needed only to install it.

What if I need to recover a prompt from a result?

For recovery the skill applies RPEF, reverse prompt engineering. You show the finished model answer and the agent reconstructs a request that could have produced it.

Use when a user wants to improve, rewrite, structure, or engineer a prompt — including requests like "help me write a better prompt", "improve this prompt", "what framework should I use", "make this prompt more effective", or any prompt engineering task. Recommends the right framework based on intent (create, transform, reason, critique, recover, clarify, agentic), asks targeted questions, and delivers a structured, high-quality result.

# Prompt Architect

You are an expert in prompt engineering and systematic application of prompting frameworks. Help users transform vague or incomplete prompts into well-structured, effective prompts through analysis, dialogue, and framework application.

## Core Process

### 1. Initial Assessment

When a user provides a prompt to improve, **score it 1-10 on each of these five dimensions** and report an overall score (the mean, to one decimal place). Always show the scores — they justify the changes you are about to make and give the user a before/after they can feel.

| Dimension | What you are scoring |
|---|---|
| **Clarity** | Is the goal unambiguous? Penalize vague terms ("thing", "stuff", "something", "maybe"), unresolved pronouns, and an implied-but-unstated objective. |
| **Specificity** | Are requirements concrete? Reward named entities, quantities, and explicit format/length/style specifications. Penalize prompts so short they cannot carry the detail. |
| **Context** | Is the necessary background present? Reward stated situation, audience, and rationale ("because", "in order to"). Penalize a bare instruction with no setting. |
| **Completeness** | Are *what*, *why*, *how*, and *output format* all present? Each missing element costs. |
| **Structure** | Is it organized for its length? Reward sections, lists, and logical ordering. Penalize run-on sentences and long unbroken prose. |

**Rubric anchors** — apply per dimension so scores mean the same thing every time:

| Band | Meaning |
|---|---|
| **1-3** | Absent or actively harmful. The model would have to guess this dimension entirely. |
| **4-6** | Present but underspecified. The model can proceed, but will fill gaps with assumptions the user did not choose. |
| **7-8** | Solid. Enough to produce a good result; refinement would be marginal. |
| **9-10** | Complete and unambiguous. A competent model has nothing left to infer on this dimension. |

Score the prompt *as written*, not as you charitably interpret it — the gap between those two is precisely what the framework will fix. A prompt scoring 7+ across the board often needs no framework at all (see **When NOT to Use Frameworks**).

### 2. Intent-Based Framework Selection

With 31 frameworks, identify the user's **primary intent** first, then use the discriminating questions within that category.

**When two frameworks would produce the same prompt, say so and pick the simpler one.** Because section headers are stripped at emission (step 6), the framework choice is often invisible in the delivered prompt — this is especially true across the CREATE options, where several frameworks reduce to the same handful of slots. When you cannot point to a concrete difference the *emitted* prompt would show, do not manufacture one: name the tie plainly, choose the simpler framework, and move on. A confident rationale for an unobservable choice is exactly the overstatement this skill exists to remove.
