Why this level
- The skill is instructions and check scripts on the Python standard library that read your manuscript and write glossary and review files next to it
- The text of an unpublished manuscript is sent to the model the agent runs on

What it does
sci-translation-skill drives translation of a scientific manuscript from Chinese into English in an order where terminology is agreed before translating. It targets papers in computer science, medicine and other technical fields. It first saves a snapshot of the source text, merges the author's existing glossary and scans the body, figures, tables, algorithms and appendices for specialized words and important abbreviations. The author then receives a term table to edit. Until every English variant, abbreviation expansion and disputed item is confirmed and the version is locked, the translator does not start. After that it tries a translation of two or three paragraphs of methods or results, then translates the whole paper, and finalizes the abstract last. An independent review compares source and translation, term consistency across the manuscript, the binding of numbers to metrics and the citations. Only real problems are fixed, followed by a recheck. The output is the translation, the approved glossary, a review record if needed and questions for the author. Scripts on the Python standard library (`audit_translation.py`, `check_glossary_gate.py`) check numbers, protected fragments, citation counts, structure and registered terms. There are profiles for different fields: security and AI, medicine and biology, engineering and materials.
Who it is for. Chinese-speaking researchers in computer science, medicine and engineering who prepare an English paper and want to avoid term drift and distorted meaning.
Good fit when
- One term is called differently in the abstract, body and figure captions of a manuscript
- Before submitting to a journal you need an English version and a check that conditions and caveats did not turn into claims
- The paper contains formulas, LaTeX and citations that must survive translation
- The author wants to approve English names and abbreviation expansions in a table personally
- A finished translation needs independent verification of numbers, metrics and citation counts
Not a fit when
- You need a quick translation of a short letter or note: the multi-step process is overkill
- The author is not ready to confirm a term table: the skill does not start translating before the glossary is approved
- The translation direction is different: the skill is written for Chinese to English
- A medical manuscript goes to print without a specialist: the project requires final review by a domain professional
Example request
Translate paper.tex into English with sci-translation-skill: first build a table of terms and abbreviations for my approvalLimitations
- The skill is written for translating Chinese into English. The README is in Chinese and English.
- Real-world use is confirmed only in Codex. Directories for Claude Code, OpenClaw, OpenCode and Hermes Agent are listed as supported interfaces and not as verified installs.
- Multi-agent mode means several independent task contexts and not different models or specialists. Without tools the review runs sequentially in one context, and this is disclosed in the record.
- The author is responsible for scientific correctness: the scripts check numbers and structure and do not judge meaning.
How to disable. Delete the `sci-translation-skill` directory from the agent's skills folder, for example `~/.codex/skills/`, and restart the session. Glossary files and review records sit next to your manuscript and can be deleted by hand.
FAQ
How do I install sci-translation-skill?
Copy the directory containing `SKILL.md` into the agent's skills folder, for example with `rsync -a --exclude '.git/' ./ ~/.codex/skills/sci-translation-skill/` for Codex. Keep the `references/`, `scripts/` and `examples/` directories. Then refresh skills or open a new session.
Why does the translation not start right away?
First the skill reviews the manuscript and hands you a table of terms and abbreviations. Until you confirm all variants and the version is locked, the translator does not run, so terms do not drift between the abstract, body and captions.
What do the scripts check?
`audit_translation.py` compares numbers, protected fragments, citation counts, basic structure and registered terms, and `check_glossary_gate.py` watches the glossary lock. They do not judge meaning.
Does the skill suit medical papers?
Yes, medicine and biology have a dedicated profile that checks study design, association versus causation, effect sizes and intervals, doses and endpoints. The author states that a medical manuscript needs final review by a specialist.
Does it work with LaTeX?
Yes, the skill preserves LaTeX, formulas, macros and citations and checks their numbers during review. Complex typesetting still needs a human or render check.

README in short
The README explains why a request to polish in SCI style does not replace a process: fluent does not mean accurate. Then come the five workflow steps, a capabilities table with limits, field profiles, installation and a list of supported agents with the caveat that only Codex has been verified, plus ready prompts for starting.
