Symbiotic AI
Personal agent context in plain Markdown files you own, plus an onboarding skill built on a short interview
Low risk
We rate an entry low when it mostly gives the agent instructions and reference material.
Why this level
- The skill runs an interview and writes plain Markdown files into a chosen folder

Install the onboarding skill with gh skill install lout33/symbiotic-ai symbiotic-onboard, then invoke symbiotic-onboard and answer the questions one at a time.
Other ways from the author
gh skill install lout33/symbiotic-ai symbiotic-onboardInstalls the onboarding skill. Then invoke symbiotic-onboard in your agent.
This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.
What it does
Symbiotic AI keeps context about the agent and about you in a few Markdown files that live on your disk and move between models. SOUL.md describes the agent's character, USER.md your profile, AGENTS.md operating rules, NOW.md current tasks and state. The agent reads these at session start and updates NOW.md as you work, so context accumulates over time. The symbiotic-onboard skill fills the files for you: it runs a short one-question-at-a-time interview and writes answers into the right sections. You can read the files, edit them by hand and version them in git.
Who it is for. For people who want a personal agent to remember them across sessions through plain files under their control.
Good fit when
- You set up a personal agent and want portable context with no platform lock-in
- You are tired of re-explaining to the agent who you are and what you work on
- You stare at blank templates full of placeholders and do not know what to type
Not a fit when
- You want built-in platform memory rather than files under your control
- You are not comfortable keeping personal notes in plain Markdown files
Example request
Walk me through the Symbiotic onboarding and fill my context files from my answersLimitations
It is a system of files and instructions, not an app, and quality depends on how the files are filled. The repository states no license, which is worth noting before reusing the code. Some scenarios in the guides rely on third-party tools like Hermes, OpenClaw and Telegram and are set up separately.
How to disable. Remove the symbiotic-onboard skill folder from your agent's skills directory and, if no longer needed, the context files SOUL.md, USER.md, AGENTS.md and NOW.md.
Security check
- The skill runs an interview and writes plain Markdown files into a chosen folder
README in short
The README describes Symbiotic AI as a personal context system for an agent that keeps your identity and tasks in four Markdown files under your control. The author contrasts this with built-in platform memory: the files are transparent, editable and portable across models. The quick start installs the symbiotic-onboard skill, which fills USER.md and NOW.md through a short interview. It ships filled example profiles, a multi-agent hierarchy guide and setup for external scenarios. The project is positioned as a reference implementation of a thinking-with-an-agent approach.
SKILL.md
--- name: symbiotic-onboard description: > Onboard a new user into a Symbiotic AI setup by interviewing them one sharp question at a time and writing their own context files (SOUL.md, USER.md, NOW.md, and AGENTS.md) as plain Markdown they keep. Use this whenever someone is setting up a personal AI agent, wants their assistant to remember or understand them across sessions, mentions Symbiotic AI / SOUL.md / USER.md / NOW.md, is staring at blank template files full of [bracketed placeholders], or asks how to give an AI persistent context they own and can move between models. metadata: author: symbiotic-ai version: 1.0.0 --- # Symbiotic Onboard ## What this does and why This skill sets a brand-new user up with a working Symbiotic AI configuration in one short conversation. The whole point is ownership and portability: a person's context lives in plain Markdown files they own, can read and edit by hand, can version, and can carry to any model. ## The core rule Interview one sharp question at a time. Never dump a list of questions. One question, wait, write the answer into the right file, then ask the next. ## Setup before the interview 1. Decide where the files go. Default to the current working directory. 2. Seed the files from the bundled templates so the structure is correct. 3. Tell the user, briefly, what is about to happen and why it matters.
FAQ
Where is my data stored?
In plain Markdown files in a folder you choose. Nothing goes to a vendor's hidden store; the files are readable and can be tracked in git.
Does it work across models?
Yes, the files are plain text and any agent that reads local files can load them, for example Claude Code or opencode.
