Extended access
Why this level
- The agent sends search queries and page URLs to the Tavily cloud, and some commands require sign-in or a key
- The CLI installs from an internet script and stores credentials after sign-in
- The crawl command writes many files to disk in the chosen folder
Install
- Works in
In your terminal, with SkillFoxx CLI
npx skillfoxx add skills/tavily-agent-skillsDetects the agents on your machine, shows the access level and pins the version.

What it does
Tavily Agent Skills is the official Tavily skill set that teaches an agent to use the tvly command-line client. Through it the agent searches the web, pulls clean page text and gathers material from sites. Search results are shaped for language models: text snippets, relevance scores and metadata. There are eight skills. tavily-search searches with domain, time range and depth filters. tavily-extract pulls markdown or text from specific URLs, including JavaScript-rendered pages. tavily-map finds all URLs on a site without extracting content, faster than crawling. tavily-crawl walks a site and saves pages as local markdown files. tavily-research builds a multi-source research report with citations in 30 to 120 seconds. tavily-dynamic-search filters and deduplicates large result sets so they do not flood the agent's context. There is also an overview skill, tavily-cli, with install and sign-in guidance, and tavily-best-practices, a reference for production Tavily integrations. The README suggests escalating step by step: search, extract, map, crawl, research.
Who it is for. For developers, analysts and marketers who need current web search and site content gathering inside an agent session.
Good fit when
- The agent needs fresh data from the internet and you have no exact source URL
- You must pull clean text from several pages, including script-rendered ones, into the context
- Site documentation should be downloaded as local markdown files with tvly crawl --output-dir
- Before crawling you want the site structure: tvly map lists all URLs
- You need a researched answer with citations and several sources, for example tvly research with the pro model
Not a fit when
- The agent has no network access: every skill calls the Tavily cloud service
- You want an MCP server with the same functions: the official tavily-mcp has its own entry
- You need map, crawl or research without an account: they work only after sign-in
- You are writing your own Tavily integration: the tavily-best-practices reference covers that, and tvly commands are not needed in code
Example request
Use Tavily to find news about the latest Python release from the past week and save links with a short summary to notes.mdLimitations
Search and extract work without sign-in up to the keyless rate cap; map, crawl and research need authentication. Sign in through browser OAuth or set the key in TAVILY_API_KEY. In remote sessions the localhost callback must be reachable, which can require SSH port forwarding.
The CLI installs with a script from cli.tavily.com or through uv and pip. Skills installed through tvly init are pinned to the CLI release, so run tvly update first when refreshing them.
How to disable. Delete the tavily-* folders from the agent's skills directory. If you installed through tvly init, remove the CLI separately (uv tool uninstall tavily-cli or pip uninstall tavily-cli) and clear TAVILY_API_KEY from the environment.
FAQ
How do I install the Tavily skills in Claude Code?
Install the CLI with curl -fsSL https://cli.tavily.com/install.sh | bash and run tvly init: it signs in, detects Claude Code, Codex and Cursor, installs the skills and verifies a live search. Skills only: npx skills add https://github.com/tavily-ai/skills.
Do I need an API key for Tavily?
Not for search and extract: they run without sign-in under a rate cap. map, crawl and research need authentication through tvly login or a key in TAVILY_API_KEY.
How is this skill set different from tavily-mcp?
The skills go through the tvly CLI and give the agent a workflow from search to research. tavily-mcp exposes the same capabilities as an MCP server with its own install route.
How do I download a site as markdown with Tavily?
Run tvly crawl "https://address" --output-dir ./docs/ from the tavily-crawl skill. To see the URL list first, run tvly map.
How do I keep a large result set out of the context?
Use the tavily-dynamic-search skill: it filters and deduplicates large search or extraction results.

README in short
The README starts with the recommended CLI install and the tvly init wizard, then covers manual skill install through npx skills, CLI updates and the keyless mode. It follows with a table of eight skills and a step-by-step workflow from search to research, with a command for each stage.

--- name: tavily-search description: | Search the web with LLM-optimized results via the Tavily CLI. Use this skill when the user wants to search the web, find articles, look up information, get recent news, discover sources, or says "search for", "find me", "look up", "what's the latest on", "find articles about", or needs current information from the internet. Returns relevant results with content snippets, relevance scores, and metadata — optimized for LLM consumption. Supports domain filtering, time ranges, and multiple search depths. allowed-tools: Bash(tvly *) --- # tavily search Web search returning LLM-optimized results with content snippets and relevance scores. ## Before running Run search directly when `tvly` is available. Search supports capped keyless access, so do not look for an API key or authenticate before the first request. If `tvly` is missing, follow the [tavily-cli setup](../tavily-cli/SKILL.md#setup) before retrying. If the keyless cap is reached in an interactive session, run `tvly login` to open browser OAuth, then retry the original search once. In an unattended environment, report the cap and authentication options instead of starting an interactive flow. Do not start a second login immediately after guided setup has completed. ## When to use - You need to find information on any topic - You don't have a specific URL yet - First step in the [workflow](../tavily-cli/SKILL.md): **search** → extract → map → crawl → research ## Quick start ```bash # Basic search tvly search "your query" --json # Advanced search with more results tvly search "quantum computing" --depth advanced --max-results 10 --json # Recent news tvly search "AI news" --time-range week --topic news --json
