What it does
Compass is a set of Obsidian templates and dashboards for personal planning. It connects daily entries to weekly reviews and quarterly plans. Separate folders hold notes about people, project records and publication drafts. Prompts help an agent review morning tasks, prepare a meeting or find problems in the note structure. `AGENTS.md` explains the vault layout and editing rules. Agent Client opens conversations with Claude Code, Codex or another supported agent directly in Obsidian. Dashboards read Markdown properties to display tasks and habits. You edit journal questions and habit lists in a shared configuration file.
Who it is for. Obsidian users with regular personal planning reviews who want to discuss tasks and notes with an agent.
Good fit when
- A weekly review relates journal entries to tasks and quarterly goals.
- A recurring review follows a saved set of questions.
- Projects, meetings and publication drafts share one Markdown vault.
- A user discusses selected notes with an agent inside Obsidian.
Not a fit when
- You need a stable release that includes the Life OS application
- Personal journals must not reach the selected agent model
- You need Agent Client and the local API on a phone: both are desktop-only
Example request
Open Compass’s morning-review prompt, read the weekly plan and propose three tasks for today without changing my journal.Limitations
The main branch is preparing Life OS 1.1.0 for Obsidian 1.13.1 or later; in-app testing is unfinished and 1.0.2 archives do not contain Life OS. Bundled plugins read notes; edit-approval rules are textual, so inspect your agent’s confirmations. The Local REST API key grants MCP access and must be stored outside the note vault. Code and templates use MIT, Guide/ prose uses CC BY 4.0, and bundled plugins retain their own licenses.
How to disable. Disable Agent Client and Local REST API in Obsidian, then remove the agent’s MCP connection. Preserve personal notes and settings before deleting Compass, since they share the vault directory.
FAQ
How do I install Compass?
Clone the repository and open its root folder as an Obsidian vault. Initial checks are in `00 Dashboards/Setup.md`.
Which prompts are included?
The `Prompts/` folder contains 16 workflows, including daily and weekly reviews, meeting preparation and task triage. Writing prompts are included too.
Do ordinary notes need an agent?
No. Notes and dashboards work without an agent. Enable Agent Client for conversations inside Obsidian. The Local REST API plugin exposes read and edit tools at `http://127.0.0.1:27123/mcp`.
How do I change questions and habits?
Edit `Meta/Compass Config.md`. The habit dashboard reads `habit_*` properties in daily notes; templates take the question and habit lists from this shared configuration.
Can I update my vault in place?
No. First back up the whole working vault, then unpack the new version separately and transfer personal notes. Compare settings and templates before replacing files.
