How we reviewExtended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.
What it does
aicommits reads staged Git changes and asks a selected model for a commit message. Users can request alternatives, choose a format and confirm the commit. A clipboard mode returns the message without creating a commit. Setup selects the provider. API and local models are supported alongside installed Claude Code and Codex, invoked through their normal SDK/CLI paths. Subscription-backed generation disables tools, shell access and session persistence.
Who it is for. Git repository maintainers refining commit messages for agent-prepared changes.
Good fit when
- Changes are staged but the commit message is unwritten.
- A team uses Conventional Commits and chooses suitable wording.
- A user compares several message alternatives.
- Another Git interface needs the text without an immediate commit.
Not a fit when
- The task is to fix code or run tests before committing.
- Private diffs must not reach the chosen model provider.
- New files belong in the commit but have not been staged yet.
Example request
Generate three messages from the staged diff and copy the selected text without creating a commit.Limitations
Node.js 22 or newer is required; installing the CLI does not configure model access. API providers need credentials, while subscription mode uses an already installed and authenticated vendor CLI. Staged changes reach the selected processor, so exclude secrets and unrelated files from analysis. The `--yes` option skips confirmation after generation, removing the separate opportunity to edit the message before committing.
How to disable. In the repository, run `aicommits hook uninstall` if the Git hook was installed, and remove aicommits calls from scripts. Existing commits remain in history.
FAQ
How do I get the message without committing?
Run `aicommits --clipboard`. It copies the selected message to the clipboard without creating a commit.
How do I request three alternatives?
Run `aicommits --generate 3` and select a message after generation. Additional alternatives use more tokens.
Will new files be staged automatically?
No. `--all` applies to changes in already tracked files.
Must I give it a Claude or Codex password?
No. Those routes use authentication in the vendor’s own CLI.
Is there a shorter command name?
Yes, `aic`.
