What it does
gitlogue animates Git changes with typing, syntax highlighting and a file tree. Users select a commit, range or working-tree diff and control playback. An agent can help choose changes for explanation or demonstration. Watch mode shows new commits as they arrive. Speed, themes and file exclusions are configurable. The animation is reconstructed from changes, not a recording of the original coding session.
Who it is for. Educators and technical presenters showing code evolution from actual Git history.
Good fit when
- A lesson needs sequential playback of several commits.
- An agent-selected fix needs line-by-line viewing.
- A demo records a selected terminal history playback.
- Staged changes need visual inspection before committing.
Not a fit when
- You need evidence of the programmer’s actual action sequence.
- You expect automatic patch-correctness review.
- Private files must not appear in a presentation.
Example request
Select a small gitlogue commit range and exclude sensitive files before presenting the fix.Limitations
A repository needs available commits or working-tree changes; missing history cannot be reconstructed. Playback simulates typing from a patch, so it is not evidence of authorship or time spent. Exclude confidential files before recording the screen. Long display of static elements can affect OLED panels; limit duration and do not expect system screensaver functions such as display power management.
How to disable. Quit playback with q or Ctrl+C. Viewing does not roll back Git history or require source-file restoration.
FAQ
How do I show one commit?
Use `gitlogue --commit abc123` with its ID.
Can I show a range?
Yes, for example `gitlogue --commit HEAD~5..HEAD`.
What does gitlogue diff show?
Staged changes by default; `--unstaged` selects unstaged changes.
How do I pause?
Press Space.
Can files be hidden from playback?
Yes. Use `--ignore` or an exclusion file with `--ignore-file`.
