Broad access
Why this level
- Stores the Model Studio API key and, when needed, an Alibaba Cloud AccessKey that can manage subscription seats
- Fine-tuning, model deployment and generation calls spend money on the platform account
- Installing through a curl or PowerShell script and updating with bl update run code fetched from the network

What it does
Aliyun Model Studio CLI, also known as bailian-cli, gives an AI agent access to the Alibaba Cloud Model Studio platform through the bl and bailian commands. Every command works as a structured tool call. Through the CLI an agent talks to Qwen models, generates and edits images, video and speech, recognizes speech, and parses images, documents, audio and long videos. Platform features follow: running apps, agents and workflows published in Model Studio, wired to knowledge bases, memory, web search and MCP tools, validating and uploading datasets, fine-tuning and deploying models. Account commands show usage, quota and rate limits, and subscription plans such as Token Plan connect to the CLI and common agents in one step. Bailian skills come with the installer, and bl update refreshes the CLI and the skills. Native MCP setup registers Bailian servers in Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, Qoder, Qwen Code, Gemini CLI and Pi.
Who it is for. For developers working with Alibaba Cloud models who want an agent to handle media generation, speech recognition and Model Studio app management.
Good fit when
- An agent needs to generate an image, turn it into video or voice text with Model Studio models
- You need to transcribe audio and, if proper nouns come out wrong, add hot words and retry
- You want to see model usage, free-tier quota and rate limits without opening the console
- You are building a Managed Agent or workflow in Model Studio and want the agent to validate and deploy the configuration
- You need to register Bailian MCP servers in Claude Code, Cursor, Codex or Gemini CLI
Not a fit when
- You have no Alibaba Cloud Model Studio account and API key: the CLI works only with that platform
- You need models from other providers rather than Qwen and Alibaba Cloud services
- You need orchestration, MCP, training or account features on the international site: for now they are for aliyun.com accounts only
- Security policy forbids installing through a curl or PowerShell script and npm is unavailable
Example request
Generate an image of a cat in a spacesuit on Mars with the Bailian CLI, then turn it into a short videoLimitations
- A Model Studio account and key are required. Console sign-in: bl auth login --console; by key: bl auth login --api-key.
- Token Plan seat management needs an Alibaba Cloud AccessKey, and the README advises creating a RAM sub-user with minimum privileges for it.
- App orchestration, native MCP setup, training and deployment, account operations and plan onboarding work only for China-site aliyun.com accounts.
- Installing through npm needs Node.js 18.17 or newer. Availability of Alibaba Cloud services from Russia is not covered in the repository.
How to disable. A CLI installed through npm is removed with npm uninstall -g bailian-cli. Settings live in ~/.bailian/config.json, which you can delete. Natively registered MCP servers are removed in the clients' own configuration.
FAQ
How do I install the Bailian CLI?
With npm install -g bailian-cli and then bl skill init, if you have Node.js 18.17 or newer. Without Node.js there is a curl installer on macOS and Linux, https://bailian.aliyun.com/cli/install.sh, and an install.ps1 PowerShell script on Windows. Both install the Bailian skills.
How do I sign in to Model Studio from the command line?
Use bl auth login --console for console sign-in or bl auth login --api-key <KEY> for an ordinary key or a Token Plan key. For the international site add --console-site international. Settings are kept in ~/.bailian/config.json.
How do I connect Bailian to Claude Code or Cursor?
Native MCP setup registers Bailian servers in Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLI and other clients. That feature is currently available only to China-site aliyun.com accounts.
How is the Bailian CLI different from Qwen Code?
Qwen Code is a terminal coding agent. The Bailian CLI gives any agent access to the Model Studio platform: media generation, apps, training and the account. In the README's showcases the two work together.
Which agents does the Bailian CLI register MCP servers in?
Native MCP setup supports Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, Qoder, Qoder Work, QwenWork, Qwen Code, Gemini CLI and Pi. For now this feature is available only to holders of China-site aliyun.com accounts.

README in short
The README describes the official Model Studio platform CLI built for AI agents and lists capabilities from media generation to account operations. Two showcases show how one sentence yields a two-minute short film and a cloud-side director agent. Three install options, a table of typical agent requests, three authorization methods, profile settings, updating and documentation links follow.
