Autohand Code CLI
A terminal coding agent: plan mode before edits, settings import from Claude Code and Codex, skills, MCP, any model provider
- 216 ★ on the repository

- Apache-2.0
Extended access
Why this level
- The agent runs shell commands and edits project files; the `--yes` flag removes the confirmations.
- The installer runs as a script from the network and replaces the `agent` command in PATH.
Install
Manual install
curl -fsSL https://autohand.ai/install.sh | bashQuick install. Windows has its own `install.ps1` installer.

What it does
Autohand Code CLI starts with the `autohand` command and works in the terminal as an agent: it reads the project, builds a plan, edits files, runs shell commands and searches the web. It asks for approval before dangerous operations unless you pick another permission mode. `Shift+Tab` cycles between edit, plan and automatic modes. A one-off task goes through `autohand -p "task text"`. The `--yes` flag confirms actions automatically, `--dry-run` previews edits without applying them, and `--auto-commit` commits only the session's changes. In the interactive mode `/` opens slash commands, `@` inserts files and `$` calls skills. Skills live in `~/.autohand/skills/` and in the project's `.autohand/skills/`, and Codex and Claude formats are compatible. The `/import` command pulls data from Claude, Codex, Gemini, Cursor, OpenCode and other agents, and `/mcp install` adds servers from the official MCP registry.
Who it is for. Developers switching coding agents who want to bring their skills and settings along without tying themselves to one model vendor.
Good fit when
- You are leaving Claude Code or Codex and move skills, commands and settings with `/import`.
- Before any edits in a repository the agent runs in plan mode (`--plan`) and changes no files.
- A task runs in CI as a single `autohand -p` command while a script reads the events as JSON Lines.
- The model comes from OpenRouter, AWS Bedrock or Azure Foundry Models, or runs locally.
- Zed or JetBrains need an external agent over the ACP protocol.
Not a fit when
- A company with annual revenue above 5 million dollars plans commercial use: the license has separate terms for that case.
- The machine must keep its own `agent` command, because the installers replace an existing one.
- Policy forbids installing programs with a `curl ... | bash` script, and brew and npm are unavailable on the machine.
Example request
Run `autohand --plan` in this repository and write a step-by-step plan for moving from Jest to Vitest without touching any files.Limitations
Node.js 22 or newer is required, plus Bun for building from source. The Apache 2.0 license is free for individuals, non-profits, educational institutions, open source projects and companies with annual revenue under 5 million dollars; everyone else needs the terms from COMMERCIAL.md. The installer replaces any `agent` command in PATH without asking. Telemetry and session sync are off by default, but the background repository readiness scan sends a request to the configured model unless `ui.repositoryReadiness` is set to `false`. You bring your own models and keys.
How to disable. Remove the `autohand`, `autohand-code`, `agent` and `ah` commands from PATH along with the `~/.autohand` directory. Set `ui.repositoryReadiness: false` in the config to turn off the background repository scan.
FAQ
How do I install Autohand Code CLI?
Run `curl -fsSL https://autohand.ai/install.sh | bash`. Other routes exist: `brew install autohandai/code/autohand-code`, `npm install -g autohand-cli` or a source build with Bun.
How do I move settings over from Claude Code or Codex?
The `/import` command inside a session pulls data from Claude, Codex, Gemini, Cursor, OpenCode, Kimi and other agents. Skills in Codex and Claude formats are compatible with the agent.
How do I run the agent in CI?
`autohand -p "task text" --yes` completes the task without prompts. The `--output-format stream-json` flag prints events as JSON Lines, and `--json local` returns one final object.
Which models can I connect?
OpenRouter, LLMGateway, OpenAI, AWS Bedrock, DeepSeek, Azure Foundry Models, Z.ai and local models. Set the provider in the config and switch it during a session.
What does plan mode do?
The `--plan` flag starts a read-only session: the agent studies the project and outlines steps while files stay untouched. `Shift+Tab` changes modes.
Is Autohand Code CLI free?
Yes for individuals, non-profits, educational institutions, open source projects and companies with annual revenue under 5 million dollars. Others need the terms in COMMERCIAL.md.
