Broad access
Why this level
- Edits global agent settings such as ~/.claude/settings.json and installs 29 hooks that fire at every step
- Hooks block commands and can stop a workflow you considered normal
- claude-switch reads Claude profile OAuth credentials and calls an internal endpoint for limits
Install
- Works in
In your terminal, with SkillFoxx CLI
npx skillfoxx add cli/ai-toolkitDetects the agents on your machine, shows the access level and pins the version.

What it does
ai-toolkit is an npm package that lays out a ready working environment across editors with one `ai-toolkit install` command: 116 skills, 44 agents, 29 hooks over 14 lifecycle events and a seven-article constitution. PreToolUse hooks block `rm -rf`, `DROP TABLE` and other irreversible operations instead of merely mentioning them in rule text. Skills split into task slash commands such as `/commit`, `/build`, `/deploy` and `/test`, hybrid ones and knowledge ones, including 13 per-language rule sets. Four personas (backend-lead, frontend-lead, devops-eng, junior-dev) change the agent's style and priorities. Language skills turn on only for the languages your projects use, so their descriptions do not bloat the context. Separate commands cover workflows: `claude-switch` and `codex-switch` bind accounts to project directories and show limits, `claude-app export` prepares a plugin for Claude Chat and Cowork, `codex-plugin export` builds a Codex package, and `ai-toolkit doctor --fix` repairs an install.
Who it is for. Teams and solo developers who work across several editors and want one set of skills, agents and guard hooks without assembling it by hand.
Good fit when
- Claude Code and Cursor share a machine and you want rules and skills kept in one place
- An agent once deleted too much and you want protection that physically blocks `rm -rf` and `DROP TABLE`
- One person runs client projects under different Claude and Codex accounts
- A new project needs ready `/commit` and `/test` commands and language rules without setup from scratch
- A plugin for Claude Chat or Cowork has to be built from the same skills as the terminal one
Not a fit when
- You need a single skill or hook: a set with 29 handlers is excess
- The environment forbids changing `~/.claude/settings.json` and agent home directories
- The machine runs Python older than 3.11 and cannot be upgraded
- The agent should work with minimal rules in context rather than a shared constitution
Example request
Install ai-toolkit, run `ai-toolkit install --local` in this project and show which skills and hooks were connected.Limitations
- Node.js 18 or newer and Python 3.11 or newer are required. On macOS the system `/usr/bin/python3`, version 3.9, will not work.
- Installation edits global agent files such as `~/.claude/settings.json` and `~/.claude/rules`, so run `ai-toolkit update` after upgrading the package.
- WSL is recommended on Windows, and a native run needs Git Bash for hook scripts.
- `claude-switch` reads Claude limits through an internal endpoint whose availability may change. Not every editor has hooks: Roo Code and Aider get rules only.
How to disable. Run `ai-toolkit uninstall`: it removes installed files and MCP entries, including claude-switch profiles. Remove the package with `npm uninstall -g @softspark/ai-toolkit`.
FAQ
Which editors does ai-toolkit support?
Claude Code, Claude Chat and Cowork, Cursor, Windsurf, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot, Cline, Roo Code, Aider, Augment, Antigravity, Codex CLI and opencode. Claude Code is always installed and the rest are chosen with `--editors`.
What does the seven-article constitution do?
These are safety rules enforced by PreToolUse hooks: they block `rm -rf`, `DROP TABLE` and irreversible operations before the command runs. The limit sits in the hook rather than in a request to the model.
How do I install ai-toolkit in Claude Code?
Run `npm install -g @softspark/ai-toolkit`, then `ai-toolkit install`. For one project add `ai-toolkit install --local`. Or skip the global package with `npx @softspark/ai-toolkit install`.
How do the minimal, standard and strict profiles differ?
`minimal` installs agents and skills only, `standard` is the default and installs everything, `strict` adds git hooks. The profile is chosen with `--profile` at install time.
How do I update ai-toolkit?
Run `npm install -g @softspark/ai-toolkit@latest && ai-toolkit update`. Projects pick changes up immediately because agents and skills are installed as symlinks.
