What it does
Claude Code Rust (`claude-rs`) runs sessions through Anthropic's official Agent SDK with the same account, models, tools, file edits, permissions, MCP servers, skills and session history as Claude Code. Only the Ratatui interface differs: finished messages are written into terminal scrollback once and only the bottom area with the reply and composer is redrawn. It includes a searchable `/resume` picker with forking, `/rewind`, `/compact`, Markdown export, a `/diff` viewer and `claude-rs doctor` diagnostics.
Who it is for. People using Claude Code in tmux, over SSH or in Windows Terminal who scroll, search and copy output with the terminal itself.
Good fit when
- Claude Code output flickers or jumps during long replies.
- Search and copy in tmux are needed without exporting a transcript.
- The window is resized or split into panes while the agent works.
- A single binary with keyboard-driven control is preferred.
Not a fit when
- A feature-for-feature copy of Claude Code is required.
- Mouse controls inside the app are needed.
- An interface without `claude` on `PATH` is wanted.

It is not a feature-for-feature copy of Claude Code: some features are unavailable and a few account and plugin operations still call `claude`, so keep it on `PATH`. The project is pre-1.0 with no roadmap. Startup is bound by the Agent SDK runtime and can take noticeable time. Anthropic controls billing and limits; the author is not affiliated with the company and advises watching the terms. There are no speed measurements against the stock interface.
How to disable. Uninstall the way you installed it: `npm uninstall -g claude-code-rust` for npm. Removal steps for the install script are in the installation guide. Claude Code sessions stay in their usual storage.
FAQ
Do I need a separate account?
No. The interface uses your Claude Code account through the Agent SDK. Terms and limits stay with Anthropic.
How do I install through npm?
Node.js 24+ is required: `npm install -g claude-code-rust`. The package ships prebuilt binaries and its own Bun runtime.
How do I check the install works?
Run `claude-rs doctor`. It inspects the environment, and debug bundles redact sensitive data.
Do my MCP servers and skills show up?
Yes, they work as in Claude Code. A few plugin operations still call `claude`.
Does it run on Windows?
Yes. The README gives a PowerShell install and mentions Windows Terminal.
