What it does
dbt Charts from dbt Labs is a declarative YAML syntax on top of SQL for dashboards: SQL still defines which data to show while YAML describes how to show it. Interactive dashboards and reports in various formats are built from the descriptions. The idea is that dashboards written by an agent are easy for a person to audit. Installation: `uv tool install dbt-charts`, then `dct skills intro`. You can try it without installing in the project's online playground. The package is `dbt-charts`, the CLI is `dct` and the README marks the project as beta. Apache-2.0 license.
Who it is for. For analysts and data developers who need dashboards as code that an agent writes and a person audits.
Good fit when
- You need dashboards as YAML on top of SQL
- An agent writes dashboards and you want to audit them
- You need reports in different formats from one description
Not a fit when
- You need visual mouse setup: dashboards are described in code
- You need a stable version: the project is in beta
Example request
Describe in YAML a sales by region dashboard with a warehouse query and build it with the dct commandLimitations
The README marks the project as beta and the syntax may change. SQL queries run in your data warehouse, so check them before running. Access is extended: queries to the warehouse and writing report files.
How to disable. Remove the skill from the agent's folder or the plugin through the plugin manager.
