Install

Manual install
Open the dbt MCP documentation, connect the dbt-mcp package server and set DBT_HOST, DBT_TOKEN and DBT_PROD_ENV_ID. Ask the owner what rights the token has and start with a test environment.

How we reviewExtended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

What it does
dbt MCP gives an agent access to a dbt project: Semantic Layer queries, model and source metadata, dbt commands and SQL execution. Text to SQL runs on the dbt platform (`text_to_sql`). The package is named `dbt-mcp`, the README has no install command and it is described in the dbt documentation. Setup uses the variables `DBT_HOST`, `DBT_TOKEN`, `DBT_PROD_ENV_ID`, `DBT_PROJECT_DIR` and `DBT_PATH`. For clients with package support, an experimental `dbt-mcp.mcpb` file sits in the releases. Version 2.5.0, Apache-2.0 license.
Who it is for. For analysts and data engineers who work with dbt and want to ask questions about metrics and models from an agent.
Good fit when
- You need to ask an agent for metrics from the Semantic Layer
- You need metadata of dbt project models and sources
- You need to run dbt commands and SQL from a chat
Not a fit when
- You need a server with no dbt token: some tools work only with the dbt platform
- You cannot let an agent query the production warehouse
Example request
Show revenue by month from the Semantic Layer and name the dbt models it depends onMCP
- Transport
- stdio
- Authentication
- API key
Limitations
The agent runs warehouse queries and dbt under your token, so access is extended. Issue a token with minimal rights and start with a test environment. See the dbt documentation for launch commands: the README has none. The MCPB file for package-aware clients is experimental.
How to disable. Remove the server entry from the client settings and revoke the dbt token in your account.
