How we review

Extended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

  • Input and JSON can contain internal data, and shorthand executes the supplied user command.

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.

What it does

Select a parser for the source command or file instead of splitting text columns. jc reads input and returns named JSON fields for scripts to filter. Parsing ls, for example, gives a script separate file name, owner and size fields. In a normal pipeline, jc reads existing text. Shorthand makes jc run the specified command and parse its output. By default, parsers convert recognized numbers and booleans to JSON types; raw mode returns data before that processing. Each parser documents its own schema and fields.

Who it is for. System-script authors needing named JSON fields rather than fragile text-column splitting.

Good fit when

  • Convert textual diagnostics to JSON for an agent.
  • Select named fields with jq in a shell script.
  • Add a supported file format to structured processing.
  • Compare source and normalized values on a test sample.

Not a fit when

  • The input format has no suitable verified parser.
  • Shorthand must run a shell alias or builtin.
  • JSON would be trusted without checking schema or parsing errors.

Example request

Choose a jc parser for our diagnostic output, show its schema and verify types on a test sample.

Limitations

Input must match the selected parser’s format; compare a source sample with the resulting fields before automation. Shorthand cannot resolve shell aliases or builtins, so pipe their output instead. Most parsers load the entire input before producing JSON; choose a streaming parser for a continuing stream. Suppressing streaming parser errors with -qq can hide skipped records even when the remaining output is valid JSON.

How to disable. Remove jc from the pipeline and stop any still-running source command. Created JSON files remain separate results.

FAQ

Does jc run the source command?

In shorthand mode, yes. A normal pipeline only supplies text to it.

Where are output fields documented?

Open the selected parser’s help, for example `jc -h --dig`. It lists output fields and examples; other parsers use different schemas.

What does -r change?

`-r` skips final field processing. In the ls parser example, size 6 becomes `"size": 6` normally and `"size": "6"` with the flag. Numeric comparison in jq needs the former or an explicit string conversion.

How do I handle a shell alias?

Run it in the shell and pipe its output; jc shorthand does not resolve aliases.

What happens with a large stream?

A streaming parser processes records as they arrive; `--ping-s`, for example, handles ping output. Avoid -qq when skipped records must remain visible.
