What it does
jnv is a terminal JSON viewer that updates results as users edit a jq-style filter. Nested objects expand on screen to show which fields and elements an expression retains. The bundled jaq engine runs the filter, so no separate jq installation is needed. Input accepts files or streams, including consecutive JSON objects and JSON Lines. TOML configures styles, hints, key bindings and the delay before processing new input.
Who it is for. JSON-export analysts validating agent-written expressions before putting them into a script.
Good fit when
- An agent has prepared a filter, and an analyst inspects the data it retains.
- A user expands nested objects in an API response.
- A JSON Lines export is used to refine an expression for the required fields.
- After manual checking, the expression is copied into a processing script.
Not a fit when
- The input is YAML or XML without prior conversion.
- Processing must run unattended without an interactive terminal.
- You require every jq behavior without checking jaq compatibility.
Example request
Suggest a filter for the required fields in this JSON export. Prepare it for manual verification in jnv before copying the result.Limitations
Filters run through jaq, so test complex expressions on your data even if they worked in jq. Completion covers basic object and array access rather than the whole filter language. Writing the current result on exit through `--write-to-stdout` is supported only on UNIX. Version 0.7.0 changed the TOML configuration format without an automatic migration tool, so older local configuration files must be updated manually.
How to disable. Exit jnv with `Ctrl+C`. Review redirected output files and clear the clipboard if you copied sensitive data.
FAQ
How do I open a file?
Run `jnv data.json` with your file path.
Do I need a separate jq installation?
No. jnv uses jaq for filtering.
How do I copy the expression?
Press `Ctrl+Q`; `Ctrl+O` copies the JSON result.
How do I expand the selected object?
Press `Enter` in JSON-viewer mode.
Can I save the current result?
On UNIX, enable `--write-to-stdout` and redirect output to a separate file.

A configuration file is created on first run if missing. Styling and keybinding behavior depend on the terminal emulator.
