Broad access
Why this level
- The agent reads and writes files and runs shell commands in the current folder
- Subscription sign-in and provider keys are saved in the ~/.metis/agent folder on your computer
- The skill embeds into Codex, OpenCode or DeepSeek Harness and changes how those agents work
Install
- Works in
Manual install
npm install -g --ignore-scripts @wholiver_hu/metisThe terminal version; Node.js 22.19.0 or newer is required. Start it with metis in the project folder.

What it does
Metis is a coding agent that runs as a desktop app, in the terminal or as a skill. You describe a task and Metis picks one of five tiers by itself, from a quick question to work spanning several interfaces. Planning, coding, code review and testing are handled by separate roles. The agent's workflow is a graph you can edit. Each project keeps its own copy in .metis/harness.json, so a team can adjust the order of steps to its process. For Git the agent drafts commit messages and shows every changed file. The project builds on Mario Zechner's pi agent. By default the model gets four tools: reading, writing and editing files, and running shell commands. You can sign in through a subscription (Claude Pro and Max, ChatGPT Plus and Pro for Codex, GitHub Copilot) with `/login`, or set a provider API key. As a skill, Metis installs into Codex, OpenCode and DeepSeek Harness and drives the work as an orchestrator.
Who it is for. For developers who want a coding agent with a configurable step graph and a choice between an app window, the terminal and a plug-in for the Codex or OpenCode they already use.
Good fit when
- You want a coding agent in an app window: the macOS and Windows installer already bundles the runtime
- You want to rearrange the agent's order of work for a project and keep the graph in the repository next to the code
- Tasks vary in scale and you want the agent to choose the depth of treatment itself
- You use Codex or OpenCode and want to add role orchestration to them with the metis-plugin command
- You work on a Claude, ChatGPT or GitHub Copilot subscription and want to sign in to the agent through /login
Not a fit when
- You need an agent from the model vendor itself with official support: Metis is a third-party project on top of pi
- You cannot give the agent write access to files and command execution in the working folder
- You want a minimal agent without roles or a graph: Metis has five task tiers and several roles
- You need an interface and documentation in Russian: the project is written in English and Chinese
Example request
Read this repository, plan how to add CSV export, then implement it and run the tests.Limitations
The terminal version needs Node.js 22.19.0 or newer. Metis works in the current folder and can change files there, so you need Git or another checkpoint method for rollback. Settings, keys and sessions live in the ~/.metis/agent folder.
Subscription sign-in for Claude, ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot depends on those services. The OpenAI and Anthropic APIs are unavailable from Russia, so choose a provider that is reachable from your location.
How to disable. Remove the terminal version with npm uninstall -g @wholiver_hu/metis and the skill with npm uninstall -g metis-skill. Settings, keys and sessions stay in ~/.metis/agent, so delete that folder by hand. The desktop app uninstalls like any ordinary program.
FAQ
How do I install Metis in the terminal?
Run npm install -g --ignore-scripts @wholiver_hu/metis; the flag disables dependency scripts, which Metis does not need. Then go to the project folder and start metis. Node.js 22.19.0 or newer is required.
How do I sign in to Metis, by subscription or by key?
Start metis and run /login, then choose a provider. Subscriptions available are Claude Pro and Max, ChatGPT Plus and Pro (Codex), and GitHub Copilot. An API key can be set through an environment variable such as ANTHROPIC_API_KEY or stored in ~/.metis/agent/auth.json.
How does the Metis desktop app differ from the terminal version and the skill?
The app combines chat, Git and the agent graph editor in one window, and the installer for macOS (.dmg) and Windows (.exe) bundles the runtime. The terminal version needs Node.js. The skill installs inside Codex, OpenCode or DeepSeek Harness.
What is the agent architecture editor in Metis?
The agent's way of working is a graph of steps and roles that you edit in the app. Each project keeps its own copy in .metis/harness.json, and you can commit it with the code.
How do I connect Metis as a skill to Codex?
Run npm install -g metis-skill, then metis-plugin install codex. For OpenCode or DeepSeek Harness replace codex with opencode or deepseek. You can verify the install with metis-plugin doctor.
