What it does
Patent CLI accepts a developer-tool idea and searches for existing implementations. It selects relevant package registries, adds GitHub and Hacker News and ranks matches by semantic similarity. Results help compare an idea with discovered projects. A model can summarize how crowded the area is. Fast mode uses similarity scores without that step. Output identifies checked sources and unreachable ones, with structured results available for scripts.
Who it is for. For developers and founders checking existing solutions before building a developer tool.
Good fit when
- Find related tools across registries.
- Search by function when the product name is unknown.
- Inspect results without calling a language model.
- Process search output in a script.
Not a fit when
- You need a legal patentability opinion.
- No matches would be treated as proof of novelty.
- The idea description cannot be sent to external search sources.
Example request
Find existing tools related to my CLI idea without confidential details and show which sources were checked.Limitations
Search covers selected sources, so an empty result calls for further investigation. The description goes to search platforms and, when selected, a cloud LLM provider; omit confidential details without authorization. Linux binaries and source builds require glibc 2.38 or later. Local summaries need a running Ollama model; fast mode skips that step while retaining network searches across registries.
How to disable. Stop the search and remove the binary through its installation manager. Clean GitHub credentials and provider settings separately.
FAQ
Does it search legal patents?
No. It searches programs and packages related to a developer’s idea.
How do I skip model summarization?
Pass `--fast`.
How do I obtain JSON?
Add `--json`.
Can I use a cloud model?
Yes. Configure `--api-base`, a model and your own key.
Why show an old project?
Its date indicates maintenance while still showing that someone implemented the idea.
