Octocode
An MCP server and CLI for code research: search and understand your project and all of GitHub with fewer tokens
Medium risk
We rate an entry medium when the tool runs code, makes network calls or reads project files. Check what exactly it does before installing.
Why this level
- Reads local files and reaches GitHub over the network
- May use a GitHub token
Install
In your terminal, with SkillFoxx CLI
npx skillfoxx add mcp/octocodeDetects the agents on your machine, checks the risk and pins the version.
Other ways to install
Run in a terminal
claude mcp add --transport stdio octocode -- npx @octocodeai/mcp@latestOr add to the file .mcp.json, in the project
{
"mcpServers": {
"octocode": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"@octocodeai/mcp@latest"
]
}
}
}If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcpServers key.
The button opens the agent and offers to add the server. If nothing happens, copy the config below.
Add to the file ~/.cursor/mcp.json, for all projects
{
"mcpServers": {
"octocode": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"@octocodeai/mcp@latest"
]
}
}
}If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcpServers key. For a single project, put the same block into .cursor/mcp.json.
The button opens the agent and offers to add the server. If nothing happens, copy the config below.
Run in a terminal
code --add-mcp '{"name":"octocode","type":"stdio","command":"npx","args":["@octocodeai/mcp@latest"]}'Or add to the file .vscode/mcp.json, in the project
{
"servers": {
"octocode": {
"type": "stdio",
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"@octocodeai/mcp@latest"
]
}
}
}If the file already exists, add the server inside the servers key.
Run in a terminal
codex mcp add octocode -- npx @octocodeai/mcp@latestOr add to the file ~/.codex/config.toml, for all projects
[mcp_servers.octocode]
command = "npx"
args = ["@octocodeai/mcp@latest"]If the file already exists, append the block to the end.
Run in a terminal
gemini mcp add -s user octocode npx @octocodeai/mcp@latestOr add to the file ~/.gemini/settings.json, for all projects
{
"mcpServers": {
"octocode": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"@octocodeai/mcp@latest"
]
}
}
}If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcpServers key.
Add to the file ~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json, for all projects
{
"mcpServers": {
"octocode": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"@octocodeai/mcp@latest"
]
}
}
}If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcpServers key. Legacy Cascade keeps the MCP config in ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json.
Formerly Windsurf.
Add to the file cline_mcp_settings.json, for all projects
{
"mcpServers": {
"octocode": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"@octocodeai/mcp@latest"
]
}
}
}If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcpServers key. Open the settings file in Cline: MCP Servers tab, Configure MCP Servers.
Add to the file .roo/mcp.json, in the project
{
"mcpServers": {
"octocode": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"@octocodeai/mcp@latest"
]
}
}
}If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcpServers key.
A fork of Roo Code, same .roo folders.
Add to the file opencode.json, in the project
{
"mcp": {
"octocode": {
"type": "local",
"command": [
"npx",
"@octocodeai/mcp@latest"
]
}
}
}If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcp key.
Add to the file ~/.config/zed/settings.json, for all projects
{
"context_servers": {
"octocode": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"@octocodeai/mcp@latest"
]
}
}
}If the file already exists, add the server inside the context_servers key.
Add to the file .codeassistant/mcp.json, in the project
{
"mcpServers": {
"octocode": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"@octocodeai/mcp@latest"
]
}
}
}If the file already exists, add the server inside the mcpServers key.
Add the MCP server: npx @octocodeai/mcp@latest. For private repos the user signs in with npx octocode auth login.
Other ways from the author
npx octocodeRun code research straight from the terminal.
This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.
What it does
Octocode gives an agent one toolset for code research: ripgrep and AST search, file trees, precise reads of fragments and work through LSP. It handles both local code and external sources: GitHub repositories, pull requests and npm packages. A Rust engine underneath keeps results fast and token-efficient even on large repos. You use it as a CLI in the terminal or as an MCP server inside an agent, with the same tools and engine in both. GitHub authentication is optional but unlocks private repos and higher API limits.
Who it is for. For developers who want an agent to understand their own and others' code before changing anything.
Good fit when
- You need to find how something works in a large repo
- You need to research a third-party project or package on GitHub
- You want to save tokens on code exploration
Not a fit when
- You need a full editor that changes code, not research
- The project is small and the agent's built-in search is enough
Example request
Use octocode to find where this repo handles authentication and show the key filesLimitations
Without a GitHub token only public repos work and base API limits apply. Private code and higher limits need authentication. The main use is reading and researching code, not editing it.
How to disable. Remove the octocode server from your MCP config or uninstall the CLI package.

README in short
The README describes Octocode as a code research tool for agents and developers that spans local code and GitHub with one toolset. Underneath is a Rust engine with ripgrep and AST search, trees, precise reads and LSP. It is available as a CLI and an MCP server, with one-click install for popular clients. GitHub auth is optional and expands what it can reach. MIT licensed.
FAQ
Do I need a GitHub token?
Not for public code. For private repos and higher limits, sign in with npx octocode auth login.
Is it a CLI or MCP?
Both: the same toolset and engine are available as a terminal CLI and as an MCP server.
