Why this level
- The queue executes background shell commands with the captured user environment; task settings and logs may contain private data.

What it does
Pueue hands shell commands to the background `pueued` process, which runs them sequentially or in parallel. The user controls tasks from any terminal on the same machine. An agent can prepare file-processing commands for the user to review before enqueueing them. Tasks can be grouped and depend on one another. `pueue follow` shows live output, while `pueue log` displays completed task logs. `pueue status` reports queue state, including JSON output for an agent to analyze.
Who it is for. Operators of long local jobs managing agent-prepared commands independently of the original terminal.
Good fit when
- Several reviewed commands await sequential execution.
- A user closes SSH while leaving the queue on the machine.
- Task groups need different concurrency limits.
- An agent examines a completed task’s saved log.
Not a fit when
- You need a distributed multi-machine, multi-user scheduler.
- The workflow is a heavy programmable pipeline with hundreds of tasks.
- A command contains unreviewed code or incorrectly quoted arguments.
Example request
Prepare three approved commands for sequential execution and show how to retrieve each log without rerunning it.Limitations
A separate pueued process handles the queue and must remain running independently of the client terminal. Adding a job copies current environment variables and its working directory, so later shell changes do not replace that context. Commands run through the system shell and require correct quoting. Lowering the concurrency limit does not stop existing jobs; the new limit applies when scheduling later starts.
How to disable. Pause the relevant group with `pueue pause`, terminate unwanted tasks with `pueue kill`, then stop the `pueued` service. If the daemon was started manually, use `pueue shutdown`.
FAQ
Where do I see every task’s state?
Run `pueue status`.
How do I read live task output?
Use `pueue follow` to display output from a running task as it arrives. `pueue log` displays completed task logs.
How do I hold a task without automatic execution?
Use `pueue stash` to put it in the stashed state. Return it to the queue with `pueue enqueue` or start it manually with `pueue start`.
Does removing a task stop its process?
A running or paused task must be killed first.
How do I give the agent queue state as JSON?
Run `pueue status --json` and pass on the output. It reports task state without running tasks again.
