Extended access
Why this level
- The client sends real requests with user credentials, executes operation chains and may record sensitive traffic.

What it does
Resterm executes requests stored in .http and .rest files alongside code. An agent can prepare requests, response checks and workflow steps for users to send from the terminal interface. The same files run without the UI through `resterm run`. Supported protocols include HTTP, GraphQL, gRPC, WebSocket and SSE. Local mocks, curl and OpenAPI import, environment comparison and latency profiling support development. SSH tunnels and Kubernetes forwarding can reach authorized services.
Who it is for. API testers validating agent-written requests manually and repeating the same files in CI.
Good fit when
- An agent prepared an API request that should run from an inspectable file.
- A test needs a local mock without touching the live service.
- One request needs comparison across environments.
- Response checks should run in CI with JSON or JUnit reports.
Not a fit when
- You need a built-in AI chat or ready MCP server.
- Requests to the service are not authorized with the selected credentials.
- The test changes live data before a separate environment is prepared.
Example request
Prepare a test-API request file that checks status and a required response field, using a local mock first.Limitations
Resterm has no built-in AI or MCP server; agents interact through files and their terminal tools. Prebuilt macOS binaries require version 13 or newer, and Linux binaries need glibc 2.32 or newer. Retries and chained requests can modify API data repeatedly, so inspect execution conditions and environment selection. Tokens, client certificates and recorded traffic may contain private data; keep them out of shared repositories alongside request examples.
How to disable. Stop Resterm, local mocks and CI jobs. Requests may already have changed service data; undo those changes separately.
FAQ
How do I send a request in the UI?
Place the cursor on the request and press `Ctrl+Enter`.
Can I try it without a real API?
Yes. `resterm init` creates sample requests and local mocks.
How do I start mocks in the UI?
The quick-start example uses `g Shift+M`.
Can CI use the same file?
Yes. Run it through `resterm run` with the desired report format.
Where is help?
Press `?` or use `:help` to open a built-in manual topic.
