What it does

Subtask gives Claude Code a skill and a command-line tool for running several tasks at once. You ask, for example, to fix an auth bug and add API metrics, and Claude creates a task for each with commands such as subtask draft and launches subagents. Every task lives in its own Git worktree, so parallel edits do not collide. Claude can interrupt a subagent and talk to it, then accept the result: look at the changes, ask for edits or merge the branch. Task status comes from subtask list, and running subtask with no arguments opens a TUI with progress, diffs and conversations. The tasks themselves are stored in folders on disk. Subagents can be Claude Code, Codex or OpenCode. The skill is installed with subtask install. An optional plugin reminds Claude to use the skill when it calls the tool.

Who it is for. For developers who run several changes in one repository through Claude Code and want to isolate them from each other.

Good fit when

  • You need to fix a bug and add a feature at the same time without mixing the edits in one branch
  • You want Codex or OpenCode to implement while Claude reviews and merges
  • You need to follow several tasks and view their diffs in one window
  • You want to step into a subagent's work midway, before it finishes

Not a fit when

  • The project is not in Git: every task relies on a worktree
  • There is one small task: the overhead of a worktree and a subagent will not pay off
  • You need failure-free stability: the author calls the project early development
  • Edits overlap heavily in the same files: merging will need conflict resolution

Example request

Fix the token refresh bug and add API metrics, use Subtask

Limitations

The project is at an early stage: bugs are possible, and the install method will get simpler over time. A Git repository is required. The skill and plugin target Claude Code, while Codex and OpenCode join as subagents. Subagents run on the models of the chosen tool, so they spend its limits and need its setup. The tool updates itself. You can check for a new version without installing it with subtask update --check.

How to disable. Run subtask uninstall to remove the skill and /plugin uninstall subtask in Claude Code for the plugin. Remove the tool itself the way you installed it: brew uninstall subtask or by deleting the binary.

FAQ

How do I install Subtask for Claude Code?

Install the tool with curl -fsSL https://subtask.dev/install.sh | bash or through Homebrew. Then tell Claude Code to set up Subtask with subtask install --guide: the skill lands in ~/.claude/skills and Claude asks which tool should run subagents.

Why does every task get its own worktree?

Tasks run in parallel, and each edits its own copy of the working tree. Edits do not mix until you merge the task.

Which subagents are supported?

Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode. The author develops with Codex subagents but says Claude Code works too.

What does the TUI show?

Running subtask with no arguments opens a terminal interface with task progress, diffs and conversations with subagents.

How do I update Subtask?

The subtask update command brings the tool to the latest version.

README in short

The author shows the workflow through sample dialogs where Claude opens tasks and prints a status table, plus TUI screenshots. A note adds that the project itself is built with Subtask.
