What it does
typos is a command-line tool that checks repository words and identifiers against known misspellings. An agent can inspect findings, show a proposed diff and fix unambiguous cases. Ambiguous corrections remain for user judgment. Project-specific names and abbreviations can be configured as valid. File types support separate rules and exclusions, with JSON output and CI or editor integrations for automation.
Who it is for. Coding teams correcting misspellings in names, comments and documentation with controlled false positives.
Good fit when
- Before review, an agent checks new identifier spelling.
- A repository needs repeated known misspellings found.
- Corrections should be previewed before writing.
- CI needs machine-readable spelling findings.
Not a fit when
- The task needs complete grammar or semantic editing.
- Project-specific names cannot be distinguished from typos without author input.
- Identifiers would be renamed without checking references.
Example request
Find typos in changed files and show proposed corrections without writing until names are reviewed.Limitations
The known-correction list does not cover every language error, so a clean report does not replace proofreading. Names, abbreviations and localized text can trigger false positives; add accepted words to configuration. Write mode changes files. Before enabling it, review the diff and references to renamed identifiers. Analysis covers only files that pass exclusion filters and version-control rules.
How to disable. Remove typos from CI or hooks. Revert applied edits with Git or backups; uninstalling does not undo them.
FAQ
How do I view findings?
Run `typos` in the selected directory to view findings. Writing corrections is a separate mode.
How do I preview a diff?
Use `typos dir/file --diff`.
Where do I allow a project name?
Add it to `_typos.toml` as a valid word or identifier.
Why was a file skipped?
Run `typos --files` to see files included in traversal. If a path is missing, locate the matching exclusion in resolved configuration or version-control rules.
What does exit code 2 mean in JSON mode?
Typos were found. Zero means no findings; other codes indicate execution errors.
